I think my most effective tutoring skill is that I'm able to take large and complex ideas and explain them in a clear and effective way that anyone can understand.

I have been teaching diverse groups of learners from middle schoolers to graduate students for almost 20 years now. My first MA in English and Spanish Linguistics I received from the Oldest School of Education in Russia in 2004. After that, I applied for a doctorate program at the same university with the purpose to immerse into academia, understand the theories and principles of teaching on a more profound level, as well as to teach college students. I worked at the same university for 4 years as an associate professor of English.In 2015 I relocated to the US as an international student seeking an MA in TESOL. In 2017, I accepted a job offer as a middle school ELA teacher and worked in this capacity for a year. In 2018, I decided to return back to academia and enrolled in the Ph.D. program at UNM. Currently, I am in the process of preparation of my research that explores socio-cultural mentoring of adult ESL learners.I have always been passionate about helping students as it is through their academic development and through being supported our society can get better.Throughout my career, I have taught Business English, English for Specific Purposes (Geography, Math, Art), General English, English Language Arts in middle school. I have also tutored Russian as a Foreign Language, ESL, and academic writing. At this time, my favorite professional activity is tutoring writing and providing my students with feedback on their writing assignments, particularly considering that in this time of my academic career I write a lot.When working with my students I always approach them with care and support to their academic and life situations and try to accommodate any needs they may have. I am a software programmer who specializes in Python applications and some web design. I have a deep understanding of mathematics and how computers work, but software development also allows room for creativity and exploration of an endless supply of tools available online. I like to think I bring this versatility to every aspect of life, including tutoring. Another example of this is my affinity for realistic drawing; by using proportions and geometry to analyze a scene as well as incorporating different techniques,I am able to achieve the desired result.When I teach, I try to determine the best way that you learn and what you enjoy so that my approach will be best suited to you. I have found that enganging with a student and adapting to his/her skillset allows for the quickest path to growth and a mastery of the subject matter. I am passionate about helping students build confidence and reach their potential in and out of the classroom. My experience includes teaching 6-9th grade math in Oregon middle schools as well as student teaching and aiding in both English and mathematics classrooms. Some of my personal favorite topics to teach are narrative and argumentative writing, algebra I, and pre-algebra.With the impact of COVID-19 on students around the world, it is more important than ever that students enjoy and feel confident about learning. I approach tutoring with three primary goals: increasing student agency, empowering students with a love of learning, and improving academic skills and confidence.I always start by asking what students hope to get out of our sessions and what questions or topics they want to address. I provide examples, challenges, supports, and modeling as needed to adapt to each student. Giving students the power to guide their learning builds independence and empowers students. I hope students leave sessions feeling accomplished and excited about their learning experience.

"Different is not a Disability" -- This has become my life motto. As a young child I was often sent to tutors because it seemed I could not learn during class time. My lack of learning was not due to lack of intelligence, but simply not understanding.I learn differently than most students, which is why I decided to tutor. I want to help others who are in my situation: students who are made to feel that because they learn differently they have a problem. As a teacher, I believe it is important to make sure students feel confident when doing their work.It is now my job in the role as teacher to make sure no child feels what I felt... alone. For me, becoming a tutor is much more than just a job. It is my mission to make sure at the end of each session my students feel they can do it. I want my students to understand being different and learning differently are not wrong. It's an honor, not a disability.

I am a graduate of Chadron State College. As a former U.S. Marine, I completed my BS in Mathematics and my MA in Math Education through the Hybrid program. I have taught new Marines how to fly on military helicopters. I have also taught Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 in High School, 6th grade math in Middle School, and College courses.I am a professor at Valencia College. I regularly teach College Mathematics (UCF calls it Finite Math), College Algebra, and Statistical Methods. I teach these face-to-face as well as online; I am very comfortable with creating videos for my classes and working with students remotely.I am particularly fond of Statistics. Statistics is weird; even die-hard "math people" have issues with Statistics. I like it because there is a lot more common sense and reasoning involved; it's not just finding the right formula to use.My sessions are very conversational. You know when you're in a hard math class, and you feel like no one can help. But then you realize that you know someone that took the class last semester and aced it - that's me! This stuff is all fresh in my mind and I know what they're looking for and what they're trying to say. I'm here to help.
