I am currently an engineering student at Columbia University. My favorite subjects to tutor are math, physics and introductory Chinese, as well as SAT prep. I know how stressful standardized testing can be, and therefore I hope to help my students prepare both academically and mentally, introducing them to new ways of thinking about problems that will make the questions easier to answer correctly. My teaching style is heavily based on understanding. Although there are many little tricks that can be taught to help students correctly answer math problems, these tricks often come at the cost of true understanding. Only when a student truly knows the material with a certain amount of depth will he/she be able to answer the most challenging questions.Outside of class, my interests are music and sports. I've played the drums for over eight years, and making music is one of my favorite hobbies. I also closely follow baseball and football, and enjoy playing basketball for fun.

I'm wrapping up my undergraduate career at Columbia University, majoring in Classical Studies. That means a dead language--Latin--and a lot of history, philosophy, mythology, and the like. I love it; I love the way it makes me think and interact with language. The idea is to write in our own living language, and I'm currently finishing up that self-indulgent, semi-autobiographical first novel. I think it's great---we'll see if anyone else agrees.I attended the Brunswick School in Greenwich, CT from 2002-2006. I worked hard, and I did very well. I was admitted early to Harvard my senior year, where I enrolled in Fall 2006. Long story short, my father was chronically ill, and I left school to help care for him. He required more care, and for longer, than anticipated, but it was not a choice I would ever reverse. And if, for now, qualities born of that experience must recommend me more than the usual benchmarks of achievement, they may be of more value anyway. Compassion and patience, with recourse to humor, are certainly invaluable for a tutor.I have always been able to do well in academic settings and test-taking. Much of this success derives from long-hours devoted to assignments and preparation, but no small part owes to the way my mind learns. My mind is suited to books and the classroom, and this is a convenience for which I am very fortunate. I recognize, however, that every mind learns in its own way---a reality that institutional education cannot accommodate. I make it my priority to determine what methods of demonstration and motivation are best suited to every student I work with.I look forward to working with you. I really do love learning, and think I have a knack for sharing that love.

I just recently graduated from Heritage University with a BS in Combined Science focusing on Math and Astronomy. I am currently working on my teaching certificate to teach middle or high school Math. I am very passionate about Math and Science, and I enjoy encouraging that passion in others as well. I like to watch and play sports of all kinds, but I also enjoy playing computer and video games. I am also an avid gardener because I like to grow my own produce.

I received my bachelors in History at Southwestern University in Texas. While completing my bachelors I worked at a museum as apart of my internship. That is when I felt my calling to education. I loved doing walking tours and teaching people about our little museum. I decided than, that I should get my Master's in Secondary Education at Grand Canyon University. I am seeking a full time job teaching Social Studies but in the meantime I work as a paraprofessional. I love helping students achieve their educational goals. I am a graduate of St. Edward's University; I received my Bachelor of Arts in Communication and my Masters of Arts in Human Service/Public Administration. Following graduation, I joined Austin Community College as an adult education instructor for GED and ESL students. In addition to adult students, I also provide tutoring to children and teens needing the necessary fundamentals for academic progress, or those seeking to proactively increase their understanding of a particular subject. Although I teach the four core subjects in the classroom, I primarily tutor in the areas of Math and Reading Language Arts. I especially enjoy teaching Math because I deliver the subject content in a manner that students are frequently amazed at their ability to grasp what they previously believed to be difficult mathematical concepts. I have also effectively assisted students prepare for standardized exams, whether state mandated grade-level tests, or college-level entrance exams. My teaching style is a combination of coaching and cheer leading. Like a coach, I have high expectations for my students because I prepare them using best practice subject content drills and exercises; and like a cheerleader, I excitedly celebrate every progressive effort towards their academic goal. Students - young and old - respond to my style because they want to successfully conquer their academic challenges themselves. I have lived in several countries, and have traveled to a few others; thus, I have a genuine appreciation for diverse cultures and customs. In my spare time, I enjoy tennis, swimming, and relaxing in the tranquil surroundings of my park-like backyard.

Tutoring Style: I believe the most important aspect of tutoring anyone is to first meet the learner where they are. Everyone has different styles of learning, communicating, and retaining information. I focus on ensuring that students are being challenged and engaged without being overwhelmed. I have worked with students with Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Autism, ADHD, Depression, and those who have experienced childhood trauma.I recently graduated with a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Marketing Management cum Laude. While I was studying, I had the opportunity to work as a Marketing Media Manager, a Lead SEO during a Google Online Marketing Challenge, and most recently served as the Team Lead for an internship with Goldman Sachs. Before university I served a year, full time, as an Americorps member with City Year. I tutored and mentored students ranging from K-5. I focused on a third grade classroom where I led 1-on-1 and group sessions. I also assisted in running a before and after school program, served as the Social Emotional Learning Coordinator, led a student leadership program, and delivered a speech to high-level donors at our annual gala.

I have always been fascinated with superheroes. As a child, I would sit in awe as I turned the pages of my favorite comic books. My favorite quality in a superhero was not their strength, but their ability to expand the peripheries of knowledge. Contributing to the expansion of knowledge and education went from childhood fantasy to reality and I hope that each one of my students becomes empowered by the knowledge they accumulate while working with me.If it is not fairly obvious, I am very nerdy and it would be a lie to say that it does not influence my teaching skills. I use different pop cultural references to explain a concept more thoroughly or rally motivation when needed. Though I am a nerd, teaching and student retention is always my first priority. I have been teaching higher education public speaking courses for the past three years and have seen and practiced the various ways in which students learn and engage in the course material. In my classes, I try to engage somewhat in a Socratic method of teaching where I prompt my students, offer them a framework for their conclusion, and then have them strategize ways in which the goal can be made. I do not expect my students to have "perfect" work or a "perfect" session because I know that the term "perfect" is subjective. Rather, I expect my students to come to each meeting with a goal (learn this topic, finish and get a certain grade on a speech, etc.) and success depends on meeting said goal. I much rather have my students feel successful in obtaining their goal than self-conscious for work that others might not interpret as perfect. My research interests include the study of rhetorical messages, pop culture, gender, and social movements. My areas of expertise for teaching include public speaking, essay writing and composition, history, sociology, philosophy, English, and literature.
