AP Comparative Government and Politics Tutor • +20 Subjects
I was raised in the Republic of Panama under the dictatorship of Manuel Noriega. This sparked an early interest in politics, geography, and govenrment. I did my undergrad and graduate studies in the US. I'm incredibly fortunate to have worked in my dream field of international human rights for 16 years. I've spent a lot of time meeting with Members of the US Congress and their staff, the State Department, foreign embassies and governments, and partnering with other non-profit organizations. This has given me a lot of first- hand experience in the areas of government, foreign relations, geography, and history. I've also had the opportunity to travel extensively, speak at international conferences, leading lobbying efforts , as well as represent NGO's at the UN in NYC and Geneva. A few of the places I've visited for work are North Korea, China, Egypt, Mexico, the Netherlands, Italy, the UK, Hungary, Canada, and Switzerland. I firmly believe that my personal experience can make these subjects more relevant and interesting to students. I had too many professors who only lived and worked in academia, and their perspective was limited. I'm passionate about making these subjects come alive for students who may even find a passion for one of them.

I hope to be able to help students understand topics that might be more difficult for them and in the process help them begin to love learning.

I love helping students reach their full potential by helping them learn the skills that they need to be successful. I have helped students in various grades and subjects. This past year I taught ESL online to children in grades 1-5. I have been successful at looking at a student's learning gaps and providing explicit instruction for the specific skills that the student needs. I have taught elementary school for 11 years. I have experience with teaching 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade. Within those 11 years, I have also tutored students after school and over the summer. I received my bachelor's degree in education in 2009 at Auburn University and I received my master's degree in curriculum and instruction in 2012 at the University of West Florida. I tutor all elementary grades K-5 and all elementary subjects (reading, math, science, and social studies). I love to tutor reading because I enjoy looking at what specific gaps students have (phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, etc.) and helping them on the specific skills that need to become better readers. It is exciting to see a student that struggling with reading to start to form a love for reading. I also love tutoring math. It is interesting to see all the different strategies that students come up with to solve a given problem. I like providing the tools that students need to solve. I believe that ALL children can learn and reach their full potential. When I tutor, I like to use data to help me see where the gaps in skills are. I form individual plans and strategies based on what the individual child needs. On my free time I love to be outside, play with my dog Charlie, hike, do yoga and run.

Conversational French Tutor • +18 Subjects
First of all, I'd like to say that I am a Slytherin. In other words, I have tremendous ambition for learning, and as a tutor, I believe in sharing that excitement and ambition for learning with my students. Few things are as satisfying as learning or exercising a skill, in my opinion.Currently, I am an undergraduate student at the University of Utah, studying both Linguistics and Computer Science. I'm hoping to earn my Ph.D in Linguistics by 2022, and my Master's in Computer Science by 2021. Outside of school, I regularly practice Krav Maga, Choy Li Fut (Israeli and Chinese martial arts, respectively), and ballet. In 2015, earned an associate's degree in French language from Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA. Other than that, I have been studying Mandarin Chinese since early 2015, Italian since 2007, and grew up speaking Spanish and English at home. I have been tutoring in several of these languages since 2010, and hope not only to help students improve proficiency in their desired language, but also to improve my own understanding of these languages as I tutor.Learning never stops, and the best way to facilitate learning is to help others to learn as well."It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. Rather, they went out and happened to things." -Leonardo da Vinci

I am currently enrolled at Utah Valley University where I am working towards a Bachelor's degree in English Education. I have an Associate's degree in Humanities and Social Sciences. I am very passionate about reading, literature, and writing and love to inspire students to nurture their own passion towards those subjects. While I've been pursuing my own education, I have also been assisting and teaching students with specific academic goals on an elementary level. I am comfortable with many subjects, but my favorites are English, Literature, American History, and Writing. I was raised with a strong emphasis on these subjects and I have fostered a deep appreciation for them. When I'm not working with students or chasing my degree, I love to read, draw, walk my dog, and occasionally play video games.

My interest and love for Spanish began as a child when I went to my Puerto Rican grandma's house. There was a rich Hispanic culture throughout her home and how she lived. I never understood the Spanish she spoke, but I loved hearing it and have very fond memories of it from my childhood. Fast forward to me at 19-years-old, I chose to serve a 2-year full-time volunteer mission for my church. I had no choice in where they would send me, so I was very grateful when they assigned me to serve in Chile. Those 2 years in Chile gave me an immense love for the Spanish language and a desire to continue using it for the rest of my life.As I returned from my 2-year mission, I decided to apply for a Minor Degree in Spanish at Brigham Young University. There, I qualified to take an advanced-level Spanish-speaking test to waive 16 credits worth of Spanish courses and accelerate my formal Spanish education. I passed the test with an A and continued the rest of my collegiate study taking advanced level Spanish courses. While in the first two years of my college, I also worked as a Spanish teacher in a Training Center that taught young missionaries who were just starting their 2-year service missions for my church. That job engulfed me in the Spanish language daily and encouraged me to improve my Spanish-speaking abilities.Today, I continue to speak the Spanish language frequently after having learned it 8 years ago. I hold a Spanish Minor from Brigham Young University, and I want to continue sharing the benefits of learning the Spanish language with others around me. If you choose me to be your tutor, I will give you my best efforts to teach you all you need to know to excel in your classes. You will learn more than just the curriculum needed for a good grade. Well engage in effective practice sessions, learn clever ways to grasp the language, and have fun while doing it! I love Spanish, and I know you will too after working with me!

Learning didn't come easily to me at first. Only when I understood how the brain really works could I understand the effective ways of learning. Now I love helping others grasp the same principles I have studied! More than anything, I am here to provide encouragement and support and I am willing to go to great extents to help you reach your educational goals.

I have been an educator in various high school settings for the past 15 years. As an educator who values feedback and relevancy, I find it invaluable to develop a solid rapport with my students. When they feel confident that they can trust me to advocate for them, they will work harder and accomplish more. Building this rapport, though intangible on paper, has been my greatest asset in helping students believe in themselves and aspire to greater heights.
