Tonight was Biology appreciation. We discussed how biology related to the student, his health, the people around him, the plants and other creatures we share this planet with. We discussed how this planet was the only one inhabitable to any life known to man. We touched on: -cellular evolution -taxonomic rankings We reviewed an evolutionary timeline to try to make it all less abstract, and more of a tangible subject that actually has to do with what he is, and how to handle and care for himself. I did my best to go past the "subject matter" and dive into the BIOLOGY of it all. And how it is LIFE, his health, and the health of the people around him. The student understood everything, and was responsive and aware the entire time. I encouraged him to master the key terms in his textbook and to keep a running glossary of those terms. Tonight was a broad bio intensive for him. I am interested to see how he performs in his class after tonight. It was a productive visit.

Tutoring review by Tami in Sedro-Woolley, WA
We are continuing with 2 sessions per week at student 1's mother's request. This session student 2 and I worked with wave spectrum and expressions vs equations. Student 2 correctly identified the visible light spectrum which sparked a conversation about animals that use other parts of the wave spectrum to "see" and navigate the world. Student 2 was also able to correctly identify expressions that would illustrate a given word problem. He struggled a little when given an equation and told to write a word problem to correspond but he soon figured it out and even said that it was the same process just in reverse. Student 1 and I worked on completing a worksheet on biomes and vegetation. Student 1 did well with remembering where in the world each biome type could be found. She stumbled a bit with remembering animal adaptation to the extremes of each biome, but with more practice next session of the accompanying chart I'm sure student 1 will have it down pat.

The student and I continued our talks with angles. He has a review packet with extra practice that deals with finding linear angle pairs and vertical angles. It was a great chance to discuss and apply himself to problems that are more visual than any math we have done so far.

The student informed me of an upcoming unit exam for Physical Science, so most of the session was dedicated to studying for Science. We also went through his notes for the day, organized his notebook, and briefly discussed interior and exterior angles for Math. After reviewing his math notes, we studied as many concepts as we could from previous science notes in preparation for his test.

Tutoring review by Goke in Sedro-Woolley, WA
We covered adding and subtracting fractions. The student did a good job finding the sum and difference of various fractions. Some of the sums required simplifying and conversion into mixed numbers. She was competent at completing all of the necessary steps to solve the rational equations. She just needed me to model two problems and she took it from there with minimal guidance. I was truly impressed with her level of mastery. Her report card reflected an 87 in math, 94 in science, 87 in language arts, and a 92 in social studies. She is off to a good start for the scholastic year. We had a very productive session.

Tutoring review by Laurie in Sedro-Woolley, WA
The student worked through her homework which worked with plotting points. She understood the material, but was unsure if she was doing the homework right because it was to make a picture. She showed me her last test, which she scored a 97% on, and was explaining how mad she was that she made a simple mistake by graphing x = 3 instead of y = 3.
