I am currently a student at Occidental College, earning my B.A. in American Studies. I have tutored and taught students for the past five years in a variety of subjects in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Melbourne, Australia. I currently tutor in SAT writing and verbal preparation, essay writing skills, English, and Literature. My favorite subjects to tutor are definitely those that involve writing, because they provide fantastic opportunities for students to express their creativity. One of my major goals in tutoring is to help students find a passion for learning the material they are presented with. In my free time I love attending comedy shows, playing volleyball at the beach, and finding new restaurants to eat at with friends.

If my time as a student, teacher, and mentor has taught me anything over the years, it is that simply checking the boxes and getting the right answer is not success. What I value far more is not just telling students the answers to their problems, but providing them with the resources and strategies to arrive at the correct answer themselves. Not only does this empower students, but it also gives them a framework to understand and tackle more complex problems outside of tutoring. Additionally, I see no value in simply telling a student that they are wrong, or that they are incorrect. By working with each student through the thought processes and steps that led them to an incorrect answer, they attain a better understanding of why an answer is wrong and how to arrive at the correct one.I specialize in essay writing, elementary-high school math skills, college admissions essays, and test preparation. I am confident that by tailoring personalized learning sessions to individual student needs and giving students the resources and skills they need to succeed, any student can ace their next exam, get the best grade, or get into the college of their dreams.

I graduated from Skidmore College in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in History/Theater and a minor in Creative Writing. Growing up in Westchester County, New York I began tutoring elementary and middle school students at my local JCC in a multitude of subjects. Starting my junior year of college, I worked in the History Department as tutor, with a strong emphasis on helping students in American and European History. I am most passionate about tutoring students in History and English, including AP courses. I feel that I bring a creative and unique approach to my tutoring, and I actively work to help my students find a personal connection to a subject or topic they have previously struggled with. Every student has the capacity for improvement. In my spare time I like to read, write, watch movies, hike and play tennis.

I graduated from Wilmington University in Delaware with a master of education degree (K-6). Shortly thereafter, I took the Praxis II exam for social studies (economics, history, civics and geography). What do I bring to the table? I bring leadership, motivation, humor, and a unique perspective. I served in the United States Army for over twenty years. I was responsible for teaching and training during most of my career. Specifically, I taught at the Northern Warfare Training Center in Alaska, the 101st Airborne Division Non-Commissioned Officer Academy, I was a Drill Sergeant at the Infantry School and my final assignment, I was the Senior Military Instructor at the University of Maryland (College Park). As a civilian, I have worked as a substitute teacher for Kelly Educational Services, I taught 6th grade social studies in the Colonial School District in Delaware, substituted in Escondido Union School District (language arts), and I am currently an active teacher at a charter school where I teach elementary classes as well as middle and high school social studies.Teaching is more than just instruction. It is about being passionate towards education and the future of our students. Fundamentally, all students are teachable. It is my responsibility to find what motivates each student and use that, along with respect, care, and concern for each individual, to engage each student in his or her own learning process. Students are our nation’s greatest assets, this I will never forget.Students in my classes receive direct instruction and learn from wide-ranging instructional techniques that enhance the classroom environment. My enthusiasm is contagious. Students feed from my enthusiasm, making learning fun and exciting. In my daily reflection, I focus on three questions: What was supposed to happen? What did happen? How can I make it better next time? These answers guide me to; improved lesson plans, better organization, and enhanced relationships with parents, administrators, teachers and students.I recognize that I am not alone in the classroom. There are many professionals available to assist me throughout my educational journey. I consult these experts and others to enhance my own teaching abilities, as well as offer suggestions to others as to what does and what does not work in my classroom. I continually seek self-improvement through professional development, mentoring and education. I believe in the team concept. It takes a village to teach a student. I am part of that village.Teaching is a proud and respected profession. I will not disgrace the honor of the profession by violating, or giving the perception of violating, the ethical and legal principles that make our profession proud. Choices I make directly influence my students. I am not just a teacher, but a role model as well. I bear that responsibility with pride. When I'm not teaching, I can be found tinkering around on my Camaro, or maybe at the horse ranch with our horses. I am an outdoors kind of guy, and I'm always planning the next great adventure.

I seek to find the best way to engage a student and pique his or her interest in a subject whether it be from thought-provoking examples or exciting future uses for particular knowledge. From my experience this is immensely helpful for developing and actually retaining mastery of a topic. Every student learns best in a different way and it is my goal to find what works best for helping a particular student and tailor my teaching method around that.My first teaching experience was instructing undergraduates while pursuing my master's at UCR. It was a very enjoyable experience in which I was able to help students broaden their knowledge and skills to succeed in the class and their future classes. This in and of itself was very rewarding, but it also allowed me to continue improving my understanding of the subject area as I searched for new ways to challenge them and analyzed different ways they approached those challenges. Thus, I am looking forward to continuing to teach students whenever I have the time.

I graduated from UC Davis in June 2014 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Biological Sciences, with an emphasis in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior, as well as a Bachelor's of Arts degree in English, with an emphasis in Literature, Criticism, and Analysis. I have worked as a tutor for six years. During this time, I have had the most experience tutoring pre-algebra, algebra, advanced algebra, geometry, Spanish and college-level algebra. I think based on the amount I have tutored and my overall experience, my favorite subject to tutor is math because there is always one, and only one, right answer. Through effective communication and patience, the student is not only able to learn the mathematical process, but also the ability to think analytically. I would say that my tutoring philosophy is based on encouragement and always validating the opinions of the student before steering the student in the right direction. The student must be willing to learn and absorb information, as well as willing to work with me on a schedule that will match our goals and get the desired result. I am very enthusiastic about learning with these students and making sure that they are getting the most out of every session.
