Roseville, CA tutoring
Today the student and I worked on reviewing the concepts of confidence intervals and various hypothesis tests for an exam she has next week. Because this was a review for an exam, I thought it would be best to work on generally reviewing each of the basic concepts, and then answering any specific questions she had about each. I asked her to work through each of these items conceptually, describing what each idea is, what it intends to demonstrate, and how to complete each problem. Most of our review focused on the terms and assumptions associated with each concept. She has had some trouble in previous exams with true/false and short answer questions, most of which apply to the terminology and assumptions that undergird each of the concepts. As we worked through each concept, larger theories and assumptions became more and more evident, so we spent some time talking through the nuts and bolts of the entire discipline of inferential statistics. I think this is generally helpful because if these ideas, assumptions and theories are clear and fully understood, someone taking a test can typically use these basics to infer answers to some more specific questions. We were able to cover a good deal of ground, and we worked through any concepts that she found confusing or in need of explanation as they arose. More than anything I think she will just need to focus on memorizing some of the formulas and reinforcing the basic assumptions behind those formulas in order to do well on her exam. Hopefully our time together today put her in good shape.

In preparation for his upcoming Calculus exam, the student and I went over a few last minute tips for the test. We focused on finding simple ways to memorize formulas and what to look for in the initial read through of a question to quickly know what to do. We were able to finish a free response section, as well as go over missed questions from a multiple choice part. The student is very skilled with the material and I am confident that he will do well on the test this week.

In this meeting, we covered graphs and the information that can be determined from them such as limits, domain, range, and intercepts. The student had never seen these kinds of graphs before but once I explained how to read them, he caught on fairly quickly. At the end of the session, he seemed comfortable with the material in that section. He completed the assigned homework for that section.

Today the student and I worked through some example problems focusing on methods of integration including u-substitution, integration by parts, and using trigonometric identities to do integrals involving basic trig functions. I also showed her how to use the tabular method to do integration by parts much quicker than is possible using the textbook definition.

The student is learning about the Euclidean Algorithm. He understands the material very well, so I provided him with practice problems for review. He had a quiz on Tuesday, so I helped him with questions he had for the quiz as well. We reviewed distribution and multiplication. He's progressing excellently and understands the material. He is enthusiastic about learning.

Tonight's assignment focused mainly on completing the square, which is a different method of solving quadratic equations. Overall, the student did very well! We got through the entire assignment and even had a few minutes to review polynomial arithmetic at the end of the session. It was a great session, as usual!
