Tutoring review by Travis in Festus, MO
The student and I began the session by working on addition and subtraction skills with regrouping and borrowing. We focused on just the algorithm today, and we worked problems ranging from 2-by-2 to 3-by-3. I decided to randomize the problem in order to see if he really understood the concept rather then just going through the motions of working the problems with me. I allowed him to work the problems by himself, but if he had any questions he was supposed to ask. He seemed very confident and worked through the problems by himself. He is even becoming more fluent with his basic facts, and it shows by how many more problems we are able to complete. I then introduced him to an app on my iPad that focuses on fact fluency. He has an iPad as well, so we decided to download the app and have him record his score and time overtime he practices the facts. We created a little chart to leave on the refrigerator so he can track his progression in between sessions. We then moved to working on counting money. We used the manipulatives first, but then I had him work the problems on my iPad. I wanted him to see the visual difference because when it comes to state testing, he will be taking the test on a computer screen. At first, he had a hard time distinguishing between the coins, but after some practice, he was able to pick out certain coins and count how much money he had. We ended the session by reviewing fractions of a whole and also drawing out multiplication and division facts.

For this session we mostly focused on chemistry. We went over several problems that the student had on a concentration worksheet. For each problem, we reviewed the concepts and formulas involved and then walked through them. We didn't do much with geometry today, but I gave her 12 practice problems on areas and perimeters to do before we meet next week.

The student had another great tutoring session today. We read her book, "A Panda Party" and her "Moving" book. There were some words that she had to sound out for "A Panda Party" but she was able to figure those words out easily. She read fluently for the most part. Before the book, "Moving" I made up some flashcards for her with words she was unsure of when she read them the first time. This helped her read more fluently the second time. She answered her homework questions for Monday and Tuesday. We went over her new spelling words and then she completed a spelling homework.

We continued our practice of the chain rule, and we added the concepts of derivatives of logarithms. The student has already mastered the calculus concepts, so we reviewed the properties of logs and how we can use them to simplify problems, especially with implicit differentiation. We then did some practice problems to address some of the more complicated algebraic problems that arise in these types of questions.

The student and I reviewed how to do one step algebra equations with fractions. We also reviewed how to add and subtract mixed numbers. I checked his math homework and walked through any incorrect problems with him. He did well and had no issues focusing on the work. The only area he struggled was setting up word problems. I will try to focus on practicing more word problems with him in the future.
