Danville, CA tutoring
Today we worked through problems on the rather mundane topic of surface areas. Conceptually, these problems were fairly straight forward, although they do require a bit of work. The student did quite well once she got started. She did make a few errors, but she understood them as soon as a simple correction was given.

The student did not have any math homework today but she did have some English literature homework. Her assignment required her to find an article relating to globalization and identify the various issues the article mentions. She used my phone and searched for articles, it took several tries until the student found an article she thought had enough issues mentioned for her to write about. The article was fairly long so I suggested to the student to write down each time an issue was brought up and where so that when she had to go back to write about the issues she knew exactly which issue was where in the article. This worked out fairly well and she was able to write without having to reread and search the article multiple times. For the remainder of the time, we worked on math problems form the ACT book because the student identified math as her weakest subject.

The student and I began the session by reviewing his homework assignment, which focused on dividing and multiplying monomials. We then reviewed for his upcoming high school entrance exam, focusing mostly on geometry problems, which is the area where he most needs review. I encouraged him to go over the formulas for area and perimeter of squares, rectangles, circles and triangles, as well as the Pythagorean Theorem. We'll continue work on this topic during the next session.

The student and I started with verbal. She was doing ok but still struggling on some of the questions. She seems to have an idea of what she should skip and where she should guess. We then went to math. I had her do questions with algebraic patterns and reviewed newly defined functions. She had a difficult time manipulating equations; I went through the rules for working with variables and exponents. This seemed to help. I also went over scientific notation and how to convert a number to or from it.
