Session Summaries by Tutors

Campbell, CA tutoring
I coached the student through Math on angles and angles sums of various polygons. She continues to do well with these recent geometry concepts. She had good and relevant notes readily available and got them out without prompting from me. After finishing the Math assignment, I checked for updated online grades with her. I gave some input about formatting and slogan-making as she made a poster, and I didn't leave until everything was printed, glued, paper-clipped, etc. I briefed the student's mom about the day's progress as I was leaving.

Great first session. We went over the beginning lessons; a general overview of major concepts such as the scientific method, ecosystems, and cell biology. We also started on atomic chemistry. The student is positive towards the material. She struggled most with understanding the basic concepts because she did not get a strong science foundation in high school. We spent most of our time going over concepts in detail to make sure she has the foundation.

The student and I spent the entire session working on his math homework. This homework involved creating algebraic equations from word problems and then graphing said equations. He was able to quickly figure out the majority of the word problems, so we spent most of our time working on the graphing section. Right now, he is using a t-chart to graph linear equations, but we discussed how to graph the equation using the y-intercept and the slope.

We went over the student's recent English and History tests to see if she thought if she did well and she was well prepared. Her history teacher used material that was not listed on her review sheet, so she was not exactly pleased. Aside from that, she worked on her algebra and biology homework. She had very few problems with her algebra and did much of the work mentally. She only made a couple mistakes this way, but she said she would write out her work for a test. For biology, she was given a packet about the four major macromolecules and was quizzed on their distinctive features, examples of them, etc. For the few that she did not know, we researched them through her book and online. For the most part, however, she knew the answers.
