I'm a huge Red Sox fan and love watching detective shows when I have free time.

I am currently accepting students in all math subjects through the high school level, standardized test preparation (SAT, GRE, SSAT, PSAT), computer science, writing, study skills and organizational skills.
I am most passionate about math, but am comfortable working with students of all ages K-12 (and beyond!) in subjects including chemistry, physics, Spanish, writing, and more!
I am currently a third-year student majoring in Biology and a part of the Health Science Scholars Honors program at the University of Texas at Austin. I have experience tutoring high school and middle school students for the past couple of years in a variety of subjects and my favorite ones include sciences such as biology and chemistry, as well as ACT/SAT/PSAT test prep. I firmly believe in the value of good education and hope to inspire that same positivity in others.
I'm starting my junior year at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. I'm currently getting my degree in biology with a concentration in health and human disease, global health, and a minor in French. I love reading, traveling, learning and helping others learn! I have experience tutoring high school and elementary school students in math, science, and English and I love tutoring in each subject equally. Eventually, I see myself going to medical school and researching topics related to viral diseases which I've been interested in since a very young age. I'm very passionate about the subjects I teach and hope to pass my passion on to the individuals I tutor!
I am graduate of Brown University, where I received a degree in Economics and studied topics ranging from Computer Science and Applied Math to Literary Arts and Philosophy. I even helped create a class during my senior year, working together with other students to write a syllabus, gather reading materials, schedule guest speakers, and ultimately, present the results to an academic dean for course credit. After graduation, I moved to Hong Kong, where I worked at a a summer program at the University of Hong Kong, in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, as a Teaching Assistant in a Game Theory class for advanced middle school students. After the program ended, I traveled around Asia, visiting places in Malaysia and Vietnam before eventually returning to the American South, where, as a native North Carolinian, I feel at home. I usually prefer tutoring in subjects involving math and social sciences but I am very flexible. Outside of education, I love playing guitar and piano, and I have released music both as a solo artist and as part of a band. I also like to play disc golf and lacrosse and enjoy participating in fantasy football.
I am a fourth year undergraduate student at The University of Texas at Austin pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering Honors with minors in Computer Science and Business. I have always been passionate about helping others by continuing the chain of mentorship that I received and helping others avoid the same mistakes I once made. Prior to University, I spent my spare time spreading environmental awareness to elementary students, coaching middle school basketball teams, and guiding nascent MathCounts and Science Olympiad programs. Since arriving at UT Austin, I have had the privilege of teaching a classroom of middle schoolers for a semester as part of the UTeach Outreach program. I am most passionate about Math, Computer Science, and the college application process. In my experience helping struggling students prepare their applications for admissions, I have had the most fun reviewing essays and revising resumes. I also enjoy sharing tips and tricks to solving any Standardized Math Test questions! I truly believe education is the key to a better future, and it cannot be taken for granted because of the unequal opportunities that others face. Outside of academia, I enjoy working out, hiking, playing sports with my friends, and showing people new songs!
I am now on my second). I have always valued education but at times saw that teaching methods did not adapt appropriately to the student. There is more than one way to learn material. Because of that I hope to spend some time with students, helping them get the test scores that will allow them to get into their dream school. Throughout my high school and college career I gained extensive experience in tutoring members of my rugby team, fellow classmates and friends. Regarding the subjects I have taught- I am familiar with math all the way up to Algebra 2 (including ACT and SAT Math), I have helped many students prepare for the SAT and ACT. Many times smart students have issues with standardized tests due to improper test taking strategies. Every student has unique strengths and weaknesses, I focus on refining those strengths, minimizing those weaknesses and combining the proper test taking strategies in order to achieve the scores that student needs to get into the school they want.
An English literature graduate from Hamilton with a 1510 SAT, Kathleen treats SAT Verbal prep as an extension of the critical reading she's done for years — dissecting how authors structure arguments, deploy evidence, and control tone. She teaches students to stop re-reading passages and instead build a mental map on the first pass, which saves crucial minutes across the section.
I am able to tutor on a variety of subjects, but I'm especially passionate about test prep! I'm currently traveling around Europe and South America, before I start law school at the University of Texas this fall.
Strong verbal scores on the SAT come from reading strategically, not just carefully. Jennifer teaches students to identify argument structure in reading passages and apply grammar rules on the writing section as a unified skill set, since both reward the same kind of analytical attention. Her own 1550 composite came from exactly this integrated approach.
I am a sophomore, English and Computer Science double major at Carleton College who is ecstatic about teaching and spreading my love of learning. I am also greatly interested in sociology and gender studies, and have yet to decide if I will minor in one of those fields, too. I love helping students discover a passion for reading and expressing themselves through writing. My favorite areas to tutor are those having to do with English; I enjoy everything from AP Literature to essay writing for class. When I'm not at school or tutoring, I spend my time reading, playing piano and guitar, and rock climbing.
I'm a data science major with a focus on economics at the University of Rochester. I'm interested in tutoring students in mathematics and/or computer science, as I enjoy both subjects thoroughly, and think that a good understanding of those subjects is useful to anyone, no matter their interests. I also do tutoring for AP/IB exams, SAT, and ACT because I think it's critically important for people to get into the best college they can for as cheap as possible, and those exams are the basis of that.
Between her 1540 SAT score and her psychology degree — which demanded constant close reading of dense research — Katelyn brings real analytical depth to SAT Verbal prep. She unpacks how the test uses wrong answers as traps, teaching students to identify choices that are technically true but don't answer the specific question asked. Vocabulary-in-context and evidence-support questions get particular attention in her sessions.
I'm a recent Cornell graduate who is passion about personalized education. I studied English and Film, with a lot of everything else thrown in!
I'm a recent graduate from Lewis and Clark College. I completed my BA in Anthropology with a Linguistics focus, and I hope to continue these interests into a Masters in a couple years. I grew up in Austin, TX swimming and hiking every chance I got, and I've since moved to San Marcos, TX. I love tutoring students, and seeing the progress we can make together. Learning is all about finding the right way to piece together concepts and practice to work with your unique brain. Feel free to ask me any questions!
I am a law student seeking to help fund my living expenses while I go to school. Before I entered law school, while I was getting my master's degree, I tutored a variety of high school subjects and the SAT and ACT. I enjoy tutoring immensely, and after nearly eight years of doing it, I have developed a repertoire of tricks that help my students learn more easily. I particularly enjoy tutoring high school math and physics, Spanish, and literature, but I have experience in most subjects. I know many, many words :-)
I am a third-year Ph.D. student in UT Austin's American Studies department. I received my B.S. in Media, Culture and Communication from NYU and my M.A. in Literary and Cultural Studies from Carnegie Mellon. As a lifelong student, I love to help others enjoy the process of learning and to see their hard work pay off! I'm currently teaching a writing course at UT with the theme, "Americans Abroad." Last year, I taught discussion sections for a UT American literature course, and previously I worked as a teaching assistant for classes on introductory academic writing, U.S. history, and American culture. While I tutor a range of subjects, I especially love demystifying standardized tests and helping students improve their reading and writing skills. I also have expertise in the subject areas of American history and literature. I'm looking forward to working with you to achieve your goals!
I'm a graduate student at UT Austin's LBJ School of Public Affairs, currently pursuing my master's degree in global policy studies. I have a BA in political science from Southwestern University. After graduation, I studied Mandarin Chinese for a year in Taiwan and then went backpacking through China.
I'm a recent graduate from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering (Hook 'em Horns!). I've been involved with teaching K-12 for 3 years now during my college career and have had a passion for teaching ever since my first job in high school at a math tutoring company. I scored well on both the SAT and the ACT thanks to many prep courses for the SAT and adequate prep materials for the ACT. In high school, my favorite subjects were by far Math, Biology and Spanish, and I made sure to apply my love for those subjects through studying Biomedical Engineering with a Spanish minor. I have also scored well on the MCAT in hopes of going to medical school someday.
I'm a UH senior right now (majoring in political science), and I'm planning to go to law school next fall. I enjoy reading, puzzles, and musicals about Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton.
Between her biology coursework at UT Austin and a habit of reading everything she can get her hands on, Shobha toggles comfortably between scientific and literary prose — the exact range the SAT Verbal section demands across its passage types. She scored a 1500 composite and teaches students to slow down on vocabulary-in-context questions by reading the full surrounding paragraph, not just the sentence, so the intended meaning locks into place. Rated 5.0 by students.
I am currently a Biology major at the University of Texas at Austin. I am Pre-med and also hoping to receive my teaching certificate for composite science in the fall.
I am multilingual. I love teaching Mathematics, Sciences, English, History, Writing...you name it. My philosophy is that the most effective teaching comes from knowing how my student learns, and meeting them where they are. I want to instill a love of learning, but that will not happen if I don't get to know my student.
I am a graduate from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. I received my degrees in Psychology, Spanish, and Neuroscience. I have spent my time since college mentoring, tutoring, and promoting healthy lifestyles for high school students. I have enjoyed helping all age groups learn - from kids, to college students, to adults. I tutor a wide variety of subjects including math, Spanish, ESL, and test prep. I really enjoy tutoring geometry and algebra or SAT prep. My tutoring strengths include finding multiple ways to explain things for my students and giving real value to the learning process so that information can be retained. Outside of the academic world, I love to listen to and make music. I play volleyball, rugby, and soccer in my free time.
I am currently a Sophomore Physics/Math student at the University of Texas at Austin.
I'm Atharva and I attend The University of Texas at Austin! I am currently majoring in computational engineering, which is essentially a mix of math, computer science, and aerospace engineering. I have worked as a math tutor for around 3 years, and I have seen students improve their scores significantly in their classes and standardized tests. I especially enjoy tutoring math since I strongly believe it can be very interesting if taught in an engaging way rather than straight out of a dull textbook. I believe I have this ability to make my tutoring sessions more interactive and productive, and I love being able to help students understand the intuition behind the concepts they learn in class instead of making them simply memorize them.
I am a University of Texas student pursuing a BSA in Mathematics, I am passionate about being a leader and a mentor, I love working with people! I was an orientation advisor for two summers, where I gave students support and advice when it came to class preparation and registration. This allowed me to pass my knowledge of mathematics classes and the college class experience overall to new students. I also love mathematics because it allows me to do work using a problem-solving approach and develop a great sense of logic. I am really interested in applied mathematics, using math for real-world situations! Subjects I feel very strongly about are discrete mathematics, algebra, linear algebra. My tutoring philosophy is to help students help themselves, as this will boost their motivation and confidence, and to be a friend to them as well as a mentor.
I am currently a student at the University of Texas at Austin studying Chemical Engineering on a Pre-Medicine track while minoring in Business in the Cockrell School of Engineering. For the past 8 years, I have tutored students in all levels of math ranging from toddlers to high school students studying AP Calculus. I have worked for other tutoring agencies and also tutored through my local school district itself as well. My favorite subject since I was little has always been math! Aside from math, I also teach other subjects such as english and Spanish and others. I have worked with all kinds of students, including those with special needs or no prior knowledge in the subject. In my free time I enjoy reading, running, dancing, and spending time with my friends and family.
I am a recent college graduate who loves teaching and helping students learn. I have experience teaching English in Argentina, as well as experience as a teaching assistant for various subjects at the Summer Institute for the Gifted.
I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering at the top-rated University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and am on the Dean's list. I am a National AP Scholar and was commended by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. I am a competitive swimmer and love to 3D model, do puzzles, and personal projects in my free time. I have always gravitated towards STEM topics and grew to love them as I learned more about them.
I am Aayush! I am from Austin, Texas. I have a degree in Mathematics with a minor in Actuarial Sciences. I have taught math for 6 years now. My expertise ranges from addition all the way up to calculus and statistics. I make math fun and enjoyable to do! I really look forward to teaching y'all!
I am pursuing dual Master's degrees from the University of Texas in Public Health and Social Work. As a born-and-raised Austinite, my interests include practicing yoga, sampling local food trailers, attending live concerts, and – perhaps most of all – cheering on my beloved Texas Longhorns in football.
I am “HQ” (Highly Qualified) certified to teach Social Studies for grades 7-12. I currently teach a sophomore level ethics class at St. Edwards University. I taught several classes at The University of Texas at Austin as a Doctoral Candidate, where I also earned my M.A. in Philosophy. At the University of Southern California, I earned my B.A. with Departmental Honors along with the Discovery Scholar’s award for excellence in independent research. I have been tutoring and teaching for eleven years, with a primary emphasis on developing my students’ writing and critical thinking skills.
I am a recent graduate from the University of California at Santa Barbara, where I was a part of the Honors Program and graduated with High Honors. I have always loved learning and academics in general, and will hopefully soon be pursing a graduate degree in Political Science.
I am an outgoing, organized, friendly and responsible person. I am fluent in Mandarin and English, and I'd love to help more people to know and learn about Mandarin. Most people think Mandarin is hard, but I will say it is super beautiful, interesting and worth learning. I hope you are interested in it and thank you for visiting my profile:)
Vocabulary-in-context and passage-based reasoning questions on the SAT Verbal section reward precise reading over speed-reading. Samir tackles these by training students to identify the author's argument structure before touching the answer choices — a skill that turns tricky inference questions into straightforward evidence hunts. His 1450 SAT composite reflects the kind of disciplined reading he teaches.
I am very passionate about education and I know in depth about how people learn and the different learning theories. I focus more on my student's learning than me teaching. I am very flexible, open minded, and patient. Let me know how I can help you.
I am a second-year graduate student in the Steve Hicks School of Social Work program at the University of Texas at Austin pursing a Masters in Social Work. I also attended UT-Austin for my undergraduate years, where I majored in psychology, minored in sociology, and received a creative writing certificate. I have worked at the University Writing Center at UT for the past year, where I tutor undergraduates in writing skills. I review papers in all subjects and of all types, including research papers, lab reports, persuasive essays, creative writing, and post-undergraduate school applications. I also worked with Communities in Schools at a Title I elementary school on writing, grammar, reading, and comprehension. Writing and English are my favorite subjects to tutor because I love to see the satisfaction on a student's face when they can finally take all of the puzzle pieces of ideas floating around in their head and put them in a tangible form. Getting those thoughts on paper proves to a student that their words are worth being read and heard. My teaching philosophy is taking a collaborative, non-directive, and non-evaluative approach in helping my students cultivate writing skills and confidence that they will have for future writing endeavors. Outside of academia, I love movies, theater, playwriting, basketball, and anything outside!
I am from the Boulder, Colorado area, and graduated from the University of Colorado, where I studied English and business, while also completing a four-year study on ethical leadership. Additionally, I pursued Honors distinction through a study of James Joyce and interned with now U.S. Senator Mark Udall during his tenure in the House of Representatives. I worked with Crocs Footwear at their global headquarters as an account manager for five years in account management, before relocating to Austin, Texas, in 2011, when I began pursuing a career in education. I am currently certified as a teacher in Texas in six different subjects, including Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Business, and Special Education. I enjoy all of these subjects, but am particularly passionate about language arts. My philosophy of education centers around the learner in all aspects, teaching to the whole student and embracing what makes that student unique.

Frequently Asked Questions
Score improvement depends on your starting point and how consistently you apply strategies, but most students see meaningful gains within 8-12 weeks of focused work. The SAT Verbal section rewards targeted practice on question patterns and reading comprehension techniques—areas where personalized 1-on-1 instruction makes a real difference. Tutors help you identify your specific weak areas (whether that's vocabulary in context, main idea questions, or paired passages) and create a study plan that addresses them directly.
Many students struggle with pacing—trying to read every word carefully while racing the clock—and with understanding the nuanced differences between answer choices that all seem plausible. Others find paired passages overwhelming or struggle to identify an author's purpose versus a specific detail. Tutors work with you to master the test's specific question formats, teach you how to read strategically (not just thoroughly), and build the confidence that comes from recognizing patterns you've practiced before.
Test anxiety often stems from uncertainty about what to expect or feeling unprepared for specific question types. Working with a tutor demystifies the test through repeated exposure to real SAT questions and timed practice tests, which builds genuine confidence rather than false reassurance. You'll learn practical timing strategies and develop a routine for test day, so when you sit down to take the actual SAT, the format and question types feel familiar rather than threatening.
Most students benefit from working on both sections since they're scored together as your Evidence-Based Reading & Writing score, but the strategies differ. Reading comprehension requires understanding main ideas, inference, and author's tone—skills that improve with targeted practice. Writing & Language tests grammar, vocabulary in context, and rhetorical skills. A tutor helps you diagnose which section is dragging down your score and allocates study time accordingly, though strengthening both areas typically yields the best results.
Practice tests are essential—they're the best way to identify patterns in the questions you're missing, understand your pacing issues, and simulate test-day conditions. Taking full-length practice tests under timed conditions reveals whether you're rushing, misunderstanding question formats, or lacking knowledge in specific content areas. Tutors use your practice test results to guide your study plan and help you learn from mistakes, turning each practice test into a diagnostic tool rather than just a grade.
Most students preparing for the SAT benefit from 3-4 months of consistent study, with 5-8 hours per week being a solid target—though this varies based on your starting score and goal. Consistency matters more than marathon sessions; studying 1-2 hours several times a week is more effective than cramming. Tutors help you build a realistic study schedule that fits your school and extracurricular commitments, and they adjust the pace based on your progress and how quickly you're mastering new concepts.
The SAT doesn't test obscure vocabulary lists like it used to—instead, it tests your ability to understand words in context and recognize how word choice affects meaning. Rather than memorizing thousands of words, you'll benefit more from learning common word roots, prefixes, and suffixes, and practicing how to use context clues to determine meaning. Tutors teach you these strategic approaches, which are far more efficient than rote memorization and actually help you understand how the test evaluates vocabulary skills.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors for students in Austin who specialize in SAT Verbal and understand your specific challenges—whether that's timing, reading comprehension, or grammar. When you reach out, you'll describe your goals and current score, and you'll be matched with a tutor who has experience helping students in your score range. Your first session is a chance to see if the tutoring style and approach work for you, so you can feel confident you're getting personalized instruction tailored to how you learn best.
