Who needs tutoring?
No obligation. Takes ~1 minute.

I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.

I am an incoming first-year medical student with a deep passion for the human body and mind. As a student who thrived with tutoring, I love teaching students how to think about problems and answer tough questions.
I am a recent magna cum laude graduate of Duke University and a full-time educator in North Carolina. I have a passion for helping young people figure things out and have experience writing professionally.
I am currently a student at Duke University studying Biomedical Engineering and Economics. Just a little bit about me and some of my interests. Some of my favorite academic interests include memoirs and modern classics. I think Catcher in the Rye is still one of my all time favorite books but Percy Jackson, a modern classic, is up there too. Beyond academics, I take great guilty pleasure in watching TV shows such as Westworld, Sherlock, How I Met Your Mother, and even The Bachelorette when I'm at a low point.
I am an avid rower and bicyclist. I also greatly enjoy growing vegetables and playing basketball.
I am currently doing research on personalized therapies for glioblastoma brain tumors at the Duke Medical Center, before I continue on to medical school. I love to swim, walk my pug dog, and hang out with family and friends in my free time. I hope I can help you in your studies. I look forward to working with you!
I am a sophomore at Duke University studying computer science and physics. Academically, I am drawn towards disciplines that employ logical problem-solving. I enjoy working with others to discover new intuitive ways of understanding problems.
I am a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Duke University. I received my Bachelor's degree in History and my Master's degree in Religious Studies. Since graduation I have tutored students in American History and Biblical Hebrew, which were exceedingly rewarding experiences. I am especially passionate in helping students learn to think critically, and enjoy the process of learning. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I am most enthusiastic about tutoring in History and Writing because these subjects utilize skills that students will use and cultivate throughout their lives and are applicable for many careers. I would describe my teaching philosophy as hands on and project-based learning. I strive to include fun and relevant videos, songs, and activities into my curriculum to ensure the engagement of my students. Outside of academia I like painting, baking, hiking, photography, and having game nights with friends.
I am a rising senior at Duke University. I major in Computer Science and am also getting a minor in Physics. I have had experience tutoring/teaching as a teaching assistant for three classes: Intro to Databases, Electricity and Magnetism (for engineers), and Computer Network Architecture. I have had industry experience in software development as an intern for IBM and a cybersecurity analyst for TIAA. Outside of school/work, I play the piano and train with the Duke Taekwondo Club. I have a strong background in computer science, physics, and math, but I love learning about and helping students with a wide variety of subjects!
I am proficient at US History and can help an AP US History student towards a 4 or 5 on his or her exam. My concentration for both of my post-high school degrees was religion, and I would love to tutor students who are taking religion courses. My favorite hobby is reading, and I believe it is important to instill an enjoyment of reading in students as early as possible. I can help young people who need extra support to become better readers.
I am a freshman at Duke University in the Pratt School of Engineering. I plan on majoring in Civil or Environmental Engineering, as well as Economics. While I am qualified to tutor a range of subjects from math and science to ACT prep, I get the most excited when working on improving a student's writing because it is such a beautiful process. Sparking students' curiosity and excitement is the most rewarding part of tutoring, and I make it my mission to achieve that with all students I work with. In my free time, I am involved in a variety of groups on campus such as the triathlon club, FEMMES (a female-oriented STEM tutoring club), and The Chronicle, which is Duke's student newspaper. I also enjoy reading, running and baking all sorts of delicious delicacies.
I am a Marshall Scholar and will begin graduate studies at the University of Cambridge in the fall.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Monroe's 27 schools and 5 school districts with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in Union County Schools, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, or another local district, we match them with tutors who understand North Carolina's curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.
North Carolina has specific learning standards for each grade level and subject, and personalized 1-on-1 instruction is proven to help students master these benchmarks faster than classroom instruction alone. Tutors working with Monroe students focus on the skills and content your student needs to succeed in their specific courses—whether that's meeting EOG/EOC standards, preparing for AP exams, or building foundational skills in math and reading.
Monroe students seek tutoring most often in math (especially algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus), English/language arts, and science. We also work with many students preparing for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT, as well as those needing support with AP courses. The specific subjects vary by grade level, but our tutors are equipped to help with any course your student is taking.
The first session is focused on understanding your student's goals, learning style, and current academic challenges. The tutor will assess where your student stands in their subject, identify gaps or areas needing strengthening, and create a personalized plan to address them. This foundation helps ensure that every session afterward is targeted and effective.
Varsity Tutors connects you with subject-matter experts—many of whom have degrees in their teaching areas, teaching experience, or professional expertise. All tutors go through a vetting process to ensure they can effectively teach their subjects. When we match you with a tutor, we consider both their qualifications and their ability to work well with your student's learning style.
Monroe's schools maintain an average student-teacher ratio of about 15:1, which means teachers are managing many students with varying needs. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring allows a tutor to focus entirely on your student—adjusting pace, explaining concepts in different ways, and targeting exactly what your student needs to understand. Research shows this individualized attention leads to significantly faster learning gains than group classroom settings.
Tutoring costs vary depending on the subject, tutor qualifications, and frequency of sessions. We work with families to find flexible arrangements—whether that's weekly sessions during the school year, intensive help before a test, or ongoing support. Contact us to discuss your student's needs and get a personalized quote.
Getting started is simple—tell us about your student's grade level, subject, and goals, and we'll match them with a tutor who's a good fit. Most students have their first session within a few days.
