I am currently pursuing my Bachelor's Degree in Biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. I plan to graduate with this degree in June of 2016. I have worked for a few years previously as a private tutor back in my home town. I tutor mostly high school subjects. I am able to tutor in high school chemistry, biology, and US history. I am also able to tutor Biology and US History at the AP level, and the SAT II Biology E/M exam. I am also able to tutor the Math and Science portions of the SAT. My favorite subjects to teach would be the ACT science portion, as well as US History. My tutoring style involves a lot of preparation work as well as review. I believe that the best way for students to learn, and it has helped me as well, is to constantly practice questions in whatever subject they may be studying. This is especially true for science and math subjects. Cramming simply does not work in getting the material to stick with the student. The point of learning is to allow the recollection of material over a medium to long period of time. Cramming only works for the short term, and is not favorable to learning the material well.My hobbies include reading speculative fiction, biking, and music. I have played the viola for the better part of a decade, and enjoy playing in quartets. I also very much enjoy travelling to places out of the country, and learning about other places' heritage.I very much look forward to working with you.

I received my dual bachelor’s degrees at the University of Southern California in Neurosciences and Biological Sciences. Since graduation, I have worked for two years at a USC research institute; in that time, I also developed a love for teaching. In the course of discovering this affinity, I have taught programs from the Neighborhood Academic Initiative at USC for underserved high schoolers to my most recent employment at Kaplan, Inc. Although I have extensive experience in managing and working in a classroom, I prefer to work with students one-on-one; it is more rewarding for both of us to discover strengths and weaknesses, find how our teaching and learning styles match, and see improvement. The time I have spent taking and tutoring students for standardized tests has only refined my understanding of what students need and have the most trouble with. Although I enjoy and have experience teaching a vast array of subjects (especially during my time at a graduation lab at Irving High School), I am especially drawn to the sciences, math and English. The love for the former two stems from years of education and interest in the sciences, and the latter harks even further back to my addiction to reading that I acquired in elementary school. I am a voracious reader, especially science fiction and fantasy, and many have told me that my affection for the language is infectious! My hobbies outside devouring literary delicacies include singing, playing the guitar, basketball, running, boxing and hiking.

The job of a teacher or tutor involves the consideration of many different factors and variables when working with students. It is not as simple as passing on information about a subject or topic. As instructors, we must not only inform, but also explain, clarify, backtrack, bring in outside examples, and respond to challenging questions. We must comfort and relax our students, and help them develop tools for success. We know that our job is challenging, because if our job were easy, then our students wouldn't need us.I feel that it takes someone who is cognizant of all of these things in order to be a truly effective educator. During my 8+ years as a high school chemistry teacher and tutor, I have developed the experience and the skills in order to help students with challenging subjects, and not only to improve their grades, but to improve their understanding and confidence with which they approach their classes. While my own knowledge of chemistry and math is very strong, that means nothing if I can not pass it on to people learning the subjects. That is where I take pride in my abilities though - my students over the years consistently praised my ability to take complex ideas and break them down into relatable and manageable ideas. I have seen countless students struggle initially, only to succeed and flourish with a little bit of effort and assistance. If you are interested in being tutored, you are most likely a bright, hardworking student. Chemistry and math are very difficult subjects to master, and very few people make it through them without the assistance of teachers, peers, or tutors. I am here to help any students that are looking to feel more confident and comfortable, to improve their grades, to gain better understanding of fascinating topics, and to prepare themselves for the rigors of college or graduate school. I will do whatever it takes to help you master the material, drawing on my years of experience and all of the practice I have had with these subjects. I take being an educator very seriously, and I will help anybody that is looking to help themselves.

As a lifelong learner and a former student of math, reading, and standardized test programs, I have learned how valuable an encouraging and motivating tutor can be.I started working at Kumon Math and Reading in 2012, and found a love for helping others learn. Overcoming their obstacles became a personal victory for me, and I enjoyed meeting with clients one or two days a week and watching them grow in their confidence in math and reading problems. I began nannying in 2014, and doing homework or practicing instruments is still my favorite time of the day.I believe the environment surrounding learning is the key to success. Growing up, my dad was the master of math problems, known for phrases such as "number eight, come on down! You're the next contestant on long division" (in the voice of Bob Barker). My goal is to impart the same sense of exuberance to my students as he did to me.I believe that the most important thing to gain from tutoring is not just a better score, but an increased confidence in abilities and an innate curiosity for learning. I look forward to learning more about your academic needs and dreams, and hope we can work together in the future!

I was born and raised in Iowa. Upon graduating from high school, I enrolled at The University of Iowa where I double majored in Fine Art and Japanese Language and Literature. During my freshman year I was awarded a summer scholarship to study aboard in Tokyo, Japan at ICU. This experience sparked my interest in studying and living abroad in Tokyo, so upon returning after summer abroad I enrolled in another year long study abroad program at Meiji University. After finishing my undergrad, I returned to Tokyo where eI went on to advance my studies by enrolling in a Master's program at Tama Art University. Here I studied Typography. Also while attending school in Japan, I worked part time and eventually full time at an English Language school. Upon finishing my Master's, I decided to stay in Japan and pursue my career there and found my first job at Japan's largest advertising agency Dentsu. About a year later, I was later recruited to join Dentsu's sister company The Goal which is a fashion advertising agency. I spent about 10 years living in Japan before returning back to the United States. I have an excellent understanding of the Japanese Language as well as the culture, traditions and history. I think that one of my strengths is that I am very patient and understanding when it comes to teaching someone something new. I am also very passionate about design, fashion and music.

I graduated from Biola University with a B.A. in philosophy and a minor in Biblical studies. I taught high school students practical life lessons and theology at a local church for a year and am now looking to hone my critical thinking and communications skills by tutoring while I apply for graduate school.I tutor math and English, but between the two I favor English. It teaches us how to communicate ideas and, oftentimes, how to assess the quality of these ideastwo of the most crucial and universal skills we need in life.My goal is to help students get the most out of their education. This means more than just earning good grades. It means learning to enjoy school, learning how to learn, and learning how to think for themselves. It is an ambitious goal, but it is one for which any progress is cause for celebration. So when appropriate, I take my time to show students not just how to solve a problem but why it is important to solve and how it relates to everyday life.During my free time I like to work on cars. I own a Mazda Miata and a 350 hp STI-swapped Subaru Impreza. I also like to stay active. I go rock climbing and bouldering at indoor gyms and, occasionally, outdoors too. I also lift weights and play basketball to stay in shape.

I completed my undergraduate education in three years at Georgetown University in Washington, DC where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service. I then attended Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where I was part of the Partners in Los Angeles Education (PLACE) Corps. There I earned my Master of Arts in Secondary Education and my California Single Subject Clear Credential with an authorization in social science. I am currently in the process of adding an English authorization to my credential. I will return to Loyola Marymount to work on a second Master's degree in the Fall.I have been in the classroom for almost four years teaching social studies, religion, and English to grades 5 - 12. I have experience at both the high school and middle school levels. I also was previously a coach for the Catholic School's Junior High Academic Decathlon for multiple subjects. I regularly hold tutoring for my students have much experience tutoring a variety of subjects at the middle school level.I am in education because it is a constantly changing field where one can always work on improving one's teaching. I enjoy the challenges of teaching and tutoring because it means that no two days are ever the same. In addition, I enjoy using research based methods in education. I also believe in empowering students to reach their goals.I enjoy cooking on my free time, researching topics in Junior High Academic Decathlon, and keeping up with my friends.
