How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The SSAT, or Secondary School Admissions Test, is a standardized exam that is often required by private schools in the admissions process. Students of various grade levels can take the SSAT, including students in the 3rd through the 11th grade. There are 3 versions of the exam, which include elementary, middle, and upper. Students preparing to take the SSAT should have a solid grasp on the four sections, which include verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative math, and an essay, which isn't scored, but is sent to schools applied to nonetheless. Preparing for exams can be stressful and nerve wracking, but there is an option that may help your student get ready for the test. Varsity Tutors' educational directors can assist you in finding a private SSAT tutor in Seattle, WA, to help your child prepare.

Your child's tutor can target lessons to the areas that your child needs to work on the most. If they struggle with quantitative math, they can plan sessions that narrow in on that section of the exam. The one-on-one nature of personal tutoring helps students get the attention they need and ask the questions they have. This helps studying become more efficient, as your child can learn how to research on their own and find the answers in their given materials. If you would like to pursue extra help for your child, let us help you find a Seattle SSAT tutor for your student who can teach to their learning preferences and needs.

Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

SSAT Tutoring review by Alysa in Seattle, WA
This week the student worked on Reading Comprehension. We reviewed the types of questions that could be asked and did a few reading sections together. We developed strategies to use for "vocabulary in context" type questions as well as "all of these EXCEPT" type questions. She did very well. If she would like to do some work on her own she can try Part B in the reading comprehension section. We also reviewed the types of writing sample prompts, how and why to brainstorm, and what key elements someone reviewing the sample will be looking for. If she has time she will also try a writing sample for next week. Next session we will review these sections then start on analogies.

SSAT Tutoring review by Benjamin in Seattle, WA
Today the student took a mock math test to get used to the time and pressures of taking the actual SSAT. He took a practice test in May of this year so we'll be looking to compare his score from our mock test today to the one that he took in May. Next week we will be going over algebraic word problems.

SSAT Tutoring review by Hillary in Seattle, WA
Today, the student and I began reviewing the questions he missed on his first practice test. I generally worked through the questions in order, except for the vocabulary questions, which I went through intermittently to keep from throwing him too many new words at once. We spent most of our math time working on percentages and ratios: how to find them, how to solve them, and how fractions and percentages relate. We also worked through two reading passages. We still have about half of the test to review, which I plan on going over Wednesday.

SSAT Tutoring review by Tara in Seattle, WA
The student and I reviewed the math section that he had done since last session. The problems he got wrong involved exponents, ratios, and percentages. Therefore, we did a basic math review of these topics, including fractions. I assigned him a math review page and a math test section. Next session we will review basic algebra and geometry concepts. We went over common roots and prefixes. I instructed the student to make note cards for the roots and prefixes we discussed. I also assigned him a list of words sharing the prefix "con." The student will look up these words to reiterate the meaning of the prefix. Lastly, we went over a brief reading section. We reviewed the test taking strategies for the reading section. The student did a great job of finding the key words in the questions and relating them back to the passage. Next session he and I will spend more time of analogies, using the words I assigned him from this session.

SSAT Tutoring review by Ralston in Seattle, WA
Studied vocabulary, Latin/Greek roots and prefixes in addition to analogies and reading comprehension. The student's understanding of analogies has really improved. He needs to keep going over the vocabulary and roots. We will review some math principles and do some timed exercises next session.

SSAT Tutoring review by Avery in Seattle, WA
In this session, the student and I went over the worksheet that I created. We reviewed a number of the concepts and she was struggling with how to set up some of the problems. We reviewed them again and worked through them slowly to make sure that she grasped the concepts. We also started the session with vocabulary and she is retaining the new vocabulary lists exceptionally well.
