The student attends a private school where French is the main language spoken and one class is taught in English. We worked on his homework which required that he determine if the sentences were in past, present, or future tense. We then worked on pronunciation and vocabulary. This was an excellent first session. He is eight years old and the one hour session was perfect.

Today we went over the pronunciation for the French phrases and vocabulary that she needs to know for her next quiz. We practiced speaking, reading, writing, and we also looked at the various conjugations for pouvoir, vouloir, and devoir. She wrote everything down, and then I quizzed her. We also completed the workbook pages that she has to turn in for homework. I stressed the importance of taking the time to write complete sentences on the workbook exercises, as it helps to learn the language.

The session today was great. We did a few activities involving colors and construction paper and I also brought reading exercises. The student worked on the letters a and i: for each letter we had a worksheet on which I had him divide words into syllables and circle the syllables with the sounds a or i. His French material arrived, so then we used his new workbooks and practiced "hello" and "how old are you". He stayed focused the whole time and listened to me. He also randomly named different objects in the classroom in French, which means he is memorizing at least some of the vocabulary every week.

To practice listening comprehension, we did a dictation, then looked at how to self-correct and translated each sentence. Reviewed new vocab from dictation. Then we changed the text to the past for PC vs imp practice and reviewed when to use each. Next reviewed the use of 'de' sans definite article in negative phrases. Practiced Eng>Fr of this. Discussed resources for more contact with French and had the student describe her weekend using new vocab from lesson.

We discussed general topics in French so I could gauge her current proficiency. The student is not afraid to talk, which is fantastic! However, she needs more practice with conjugating verbs in all tenses. We did several conjugation exercises, including verb charts. We closed the lesson with a review of present tense -er verbs. Her vocabulary and willingness to try are amazing. We decided more review of conjugation rules, including conjugations for different tenses, would be very helpful for her in the future.
