I am a graduate of Dartmouth College, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and minored in Education, and Stanford University, where I earned a Master of Arts in Education with a focus on 8-12th grade English Language Arts. Since graduation, I have been working in a private Catholic school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, teaching English primarily to 9th and 10th graders students. I also teach a course on Creative Writing, which is open to all students and examines how to craft a compelling narrative in any medium, including college essays and fiction. As a learner and an educator, I have always been most passionate about reading and writing because I believe each student should have the tools to critically examine and better the world around them. I firmly believe that every person is a lifelong learner with strengths to build upon and areas to improve in, and I have committed myself to supporting scholars in that learning process.

I am a fourth year student at Harvard Medical School, and will start working as a pediatrician in July of 2016. However, if I had not decided to become a physician, I would have strongly considered becoming a teacher. Teaching is one of the most enjoyable activities I do, and I have taught in some capacity every year for the past ten years. I have taught subjects ranging from English to algebra, from physics to dance, and have taught students ranging in age from toddlers to adults. I have also provided advice on application essays, resumes, and interview strategies for Harvard College students applying to highly competitive scholarships. Each of these experiences has taught me how to communicate concepts in clear and engaging ways. For instance, while tutoring adolescents enrolled in the Boston-based Artists for Humanity program, I would often teach students whom I had never worked with before, and thus became adept at quickly discovering and implementing the strategies that worked best for a particular student (e.g., visual/tactile examples, analogies, and breaking down complex problems into smaller parts). While tutoring a janitorial staff member in preparation for the mathematics portion of her GED high school equivalency exam, I learned how to quickly identify the highest yield topics for a standardized exam and focus our efforts on those. Each of these experiences has been incredibly rewarding, and has inspired me to teach in some capacity throughout my career as a doctor.

I'm a recent PhD graduate in Bioengineering in the Boston area. My thesis involved nanoparticles and bacterial infections, but as a biomedical engineer I've had training in circuits, mechanics, some programming, chemistry and biology. Tutoring for me is a collaborative effort, following a problem-based learning with questions that will lead the student towards the answer they're looking for while providing a well-rounded understanding of why and how that answer works.

I am currently a Finance major at Boston College. I graduated from the United World College in Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At this school, my interest in tutoring and getting to know different people was ignited when I started tutoring non-native English speakers. I learned to be patient while teaching new subjects and to cater to the needs and interests of my students. I have lots of experience taking standardized tests such as the ACT and AP tests and would love to spread my knowledge to my tutees in an exciting and dynamic way.

I'm a PhD at Harvard studying German philosophy and classics (Greek and Latin). Next year, I will be starting law school to pursue my professional passion, tax law. I am deeply committed to the language and LSAT skills I've developed and I love to tutor students of all levels in these subjects. I can't imagine a life without teaching. My favorite part of teaching is helping students come to love -- or at least appreciate -- the details that make up complex subject matters. My favorite moment with any student is when the student realizes how fascinating a subject matter is after really mastering all of the "dry" details. When my students start internalizing the LSAT or languages I am teaching them, I know I am doing my job.

Germaine
Expert Tutor
Hello! I'm Germaine and I am passionate about supporting and empowering students to achieve their academic goals. Over the last five years, I've had the opportunity to help hundreds of students succeed on various standardized tests, research papers, course finals and more across a range of disciplines. Two years ago, I transitioned entirely to ACT, SAT, and LSAT prep where I began focusing on tutoring students in a 1-on-1 setting, and it was here that I discovered my enthusiasm for helping students navigate the nuanced layers of these exams. My love for tutoring comes from the fun of simplifying complex concepts into smaller, more easily accessible units. By cutting down large problems into their constituent parts, any student can become a faster and more efficient problem solver - it's amazing what one can accomplish by employing these effective techniques! My goal as a tutor is to effectively impart these formulas to my students and equip them with the knowledge and confidence to approach any academic challenge that comes their way. After receiving my Bachelors in Philosophy from Princeton University, I moved to the Boston area where my true passion remains teaching and tutoring. Much of my time is spent working with my students, volunteering as a math tutor for disadvantaged schools, and exploring new methods and practices for improving my teaching skill. Experience teaching a variety of subjects and ages has also imbued me with a knack for creativity in coming up with individual lesson plans tailored to fit each unique student. Depending on their particular needs, background, and learning style, I come up with creative solutions to make the material relevant and engaging. Whether through analogies, drawn explanations, or useful anecdotes, I strive to create material that inspires a passion for the subject matter in each student. If you're looking for an experienced tutor who is dedicated to helping students reach their full potential, then feel free to contact me!

I am comfortable, however, with upper level math classes (such as calculus), and science courses (biology, chemistry, and physics). I am in the process of applying to medical school as well. I have been fortunate to have already been accepted into a couple of schools. I would love to help you prepare for the MCATs and get a head start on your medical school application. I think this one-on-one tutoring model can be a powerful study method in preparing you for success in both the classroom and on standardized tests. In my spare time, I enjoy skiing, running, playing board games, and performing/learning magic tricks!

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students across all of Boston's 6 school districts with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. Whether your student attends a Boston Public Schools campus, charter school, or private institution, we match them with tutors who understand the local curriculum and Massachusetts education standards they need to meet.
Massachusetts has rigorous academic standards, particularly in math and English language arts. Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who are familiar with Massachusetts frameworks and can target the specific skills tested on MCAS and other state assessments. Personalized instruction helps students build mastery in areas where they're struggling and accelerate their progress toward grade-level expectations.
Boston students typically seek help with math (especially algebra and geometry), English language arts, test prep for MCAS and standardized exams, and science. We also work with many students on AP and honors coursework, as well as writing skills—areas where personalized feedback makes a significant difference in student success.
Your first session is focused on understanding your student's goals, learning style, and current challenges. The tutor will assess where your student stands academically, discuss what you hope to accomplish, and create a personalized plan. This foundation helps ensure that every subsequent session is tailored to your student's specific needs and progress.
Varsity Tutors connects students with expert tutors who have strong subject knowledge and teaching experience. Many have backgrounds in education, hold relevant degrees, and understand how to work effectively with students at different learning levels. Each tutor is selected based on their ability to teach your student's specific subject and grade level.
Yes, tutoring is completely flexible. Whether your student is juggling school, extracurriculars, and homework, Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who can work around your family's schedule. Sessions can be arranged to fit your needs, making it easier to get consistent academic support without adding stress to your week.
Boston's average student-teacher ratio is 11.2:1, which means even in smaller classes, students don't always get the individual attention they need. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring allows a tutor to focus entirely on your student's learning style, pace, and specific gaps—something that's difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting. This focused attention leads to faster progress and greater confidence.
Varsity Tutors offers flexible pricing options designed to work for different budgets. The cost depends on the subject, tutor qualifications, and frequency of sessions you choose. Many families find that investing in personalized tutoring pays off through improved grades, test scores, and academic confidence—especially when it helps a student succeed in a competitive academic environment like Boston's.
