I'm currently a college junior studying math and physics with a minor in history at Willamette University in Salem, OR. I've been passionate about physics, and the math behind it, for as long as I can remember. However, I recognize that these subjects can be rather stressful for others, which is why I want to help in any way I can as a tutor. On campus I tutor for the math department, helping first and second year students in their pre-calc through multivariable calculus classes. I always try to make tutoring as enjoyable of an experience as possible, as I believe that little progress can be made if you are not enjoying what you are doing. As such, I promote a very supportive environment where students feel like they are heard and supported.

I am a certified math teacher with a Masters of Teaching from Western Oregon University. I also hold an undergraduate degree in Math with Computer Science emphasis from Adams State College. My passion for tutoring actually began over 25 years ago when my daughters were in school. Because of this my essential philosophy of teaching is that if you don't understand, my job is to present the topic to you in a new way. Before I went in to teaching I spent many hours tutoring topics such as: basic math proficiency, Algebra, Geometry and Calculus. I even helped a group of foreign students get through differential equations, but my greatest joy was the student who was so excited just to pass the proficiency test. Overcoming test anxiety is one of my specialties and this was the subject of the Action Research Project that was required for my masters degree. I see every challenge as an opportunity for potential breakthrough.

I am an experienced teacher with a passion for learning and love to see others enjoy it too. I have worked with students (mostly grades 4-8) in one-on-one, small group, and classroom situations, both in person and online. I have an interest in all subjects, as I am curious about many things. I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading (especially my Smithsonian magazines) which enriches my life, gardening, yoga, and exploring the outdoors.

I enjoy teaching and working with people! Being boring, is a crime. Teaching must be relevant to the student and of value to be of any use. I greatly value getting to know each of the people I teach and find meaning in all my interactions with people.

I'm a graduate of CSUMB (California State University Monterey Bay) with a BA in Japanese Language and Culture. All classes were done exclusively in Japanese and my senior thesis was also done in Japanese. Furthermore, I have lived over a year and a half in Japan. As you might expect, I tutor Japanese. I plan my tutoring sessions around the student's needs and desires. If the student wants to conduct it entirely in Japanese, then that is fine. It's also fine to do a mixture for those not as comfortable with that.
