Salem is a small-town, community-based city with a variety of community events hosted throughout the year for its residents. For the holiday season, the city hosts an annual Yuletide Tour of Historic Salem. The event offers tours of the town's many historic homes, churches, and sites that may not generally be open to the public on a daily basis. Each historic location is set up as it would have looked in historic times and is complete with actors dressed in traditional attire performing daily tasks. The tour offers antiques, collectibles, and local art for sale while you learn about the history of the city. Before the tour, the event kicks off with a Christmas Parade, and the evening ends with the Salem Town Tree Lighting Ceremony at dusk.
In an effort to preserve the small-town community and downtown area, locals banded together and formed a group called Stand Up For Salem.
