I'm not that guy! Like many students, understanding comes with repetition of principles and hard work. I have the perspective of a student trying to understand, not a teacher trying to preach. I love working with people from the ground up; we start at the comfort zone and work our way to improvement. I know I don't know everything, so I'm excited to learn as well!

Kendall's physics degree makes the ACT Science section click in a way most prep tutors can't replicate — she reads data tables and experimental designs the way she learned to in lab, and teaches students to do the same in under a minute per question. Her approach treats the section as a graph-reading and reasoning exercise, since the actual science knowledge required is minimal. She scored a 35 ACT composite and holds a 5.0 rating.

I am senior at Brigham Young University with a 4.0 GPA. I am majoring in Exercise Science and am going to go to Physical Therapy school. I am also getting a minor in Psychology. I lived in France for two years and became fluent in the French language. I continue to converse with natives in French. I was a college chemistry TA for three semesters and love teaching chemistry. I did very well on standardized tests. I love to teach and impart knowledge to others in a way that is compatible with individual learning styles.

Having lived in seven states before college, Jared learned to adapt quickly — a skill he now applies to the ACT Science section's rapid shifts between biology graphs, chemistry tables, and physics experiments across seven passages in 35 minutes. He teaches students to identify the key variables in each figure before reading any surrounding text, which keeps pacing tight and prevents jargon-induced freezes. His 34 ACT composite and 4.9 rating reflect a no-nonsense, data-first approach.

I am currently studying Elementary Education at Brigham Young University. I am also minoring in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Spanish DLI (Dual Language Immersion). I am fluent in Spanish because I lived in Mexico for 18 months, but I also went through the language learning process in high school classes and understand the challenges students face. I love teaching and tutoring anyone with a desire to improve, especially elementary aged students. I try to make learning fun and accessible to each individual student's learning style. In my spare time I like to read, cook, play tennis and paint.

Most students panic when they see the ACT Science section's graphs and data tables, but the trick is treating it like a reading comprehension exercise with numbers. Samantha, who scored a 34 composite, teaches students to ignore the intimidating scientific jargon and zero in on what the figures are actually showing. Her 5.0 rating speaks to how well that approach clicks.

Most students panic at the ACT Science section because it looks like a science test, but it's really about reading graphs, interpreting data tables, and evaluating conflicting hypotheses under time pressure. Rachel scored a 33 ACT composite and treats this section as a logic and reading exercise, teaching students to extract answers from figures before even glancing at the questions.

Most students panic when they see the ACT Science section, but it's less about knowing biology or chemistry and more about interpreting graphs, tables, and conflicting viewpoints under time pressure. John's physics background means he's deeply comfortable with data analysis and experimental design — the two skills that actually drive scores on this section. Rated 4.8 by students.

I am currently a student at Brigham Young University studying Applied Physics. After finishing my degree I am planning on pursuing a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering. Since January 2014 I have worked in the physics help lab at BYU. Throughout this time I have greatly enjoyed helping many students increase their understanding of physics. I love seeing my students have a "light-bulb" moment where suddenly everything we discussed makes sense to them. I think it is extremely important for everyone to have (at least) a basic understanding of math and science as this helps us to better understand our world. I am greatly motivated to teach in a way that my students understand the fundamental principles and not in a way that they can merely get the right answer. I love trying to pass on my enthusiasm for math and science to my students, and I am always looking for ways to show how cool and fun mastering these subjects can be. Although I am most passionate about physics, I also tutor math and Spanish. When I'm not studying or teaching I enjoy swimming, reading (especially Michael Crichton and Orson Scott Card), and exchanging movie quotes with my roommates.

Frequently Asked Questions

ACT Science tests your ability to interpret data, analyze experiments, and think critically under time pressure—not just memorize facts. Many students struggle with pacing (the section moves fast), understanding what each question is actually asking, and knowing when to rely on the passage versus prior knowledge. Working with a tutor helps you identify which of these areas trips you up most and develop strategies to address them.

Score improvement depends on your starting point and effort level, but students typically see gains of 2-4 points on the ACT Science section with focused practice and personalized instruction. The key is identifying your specific weak spots—whether that's reading comprehension, data interpretation, or time management—and targeting those areas systematically. Consistent practice with feedback from an expert tutor accelerates improvement significantly.

The ACT Science section gives you 40 questions in 35 minutes, which feels tight until you develop a strategy. Expert tutors teach you how to quickly identify question types, skip difficult passages strategically, and allocate time based on your strengths. Many students also benefit from learning which questions to answer first and how to extract information efficiently from graphs and tables without reading every detail.

A strong plan combines diagnostic testing to identify weak areas, targeted practice on specific question types, full-length practice tests to build stamina and timing skills, and review of mistakes. Most students benefit from 4-8 weeks of consistent preparation, with 3-5 hours of study per week. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who can create a customized study schedule based on your timeline and current performance level.

ACT Science includes three main question types: Data Representation (interpreting graphs and tables), Research Summaries (understanding experimental design), and Conflicting Viewpoints (comparing different scientific perspectives). Each type requires different skills—data interpretation for the first, experimental reasoning for the second, and critical analysis for the third. Understanding how to approach each format is essential for scoring well.

Your first session typically focuses on understanding where you stand. You'll likely take a diagnostic test or review your recent practice results to identify which question types and topics are giving you trouble. From there, your tutor will create a personalized plan targeting your specific needs, whether that's building foundational science knowledge, improving data interpretation skills, or refining test-taking strategies.

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students in Provo with expert tutors who specialize in ACT Science preparation. With 33 schools and over 16,000 students across the Provo area, there's strong demand for test prep support, and tutors are familiar with the local school environment and student needs. Whether you attend a school in Provo or nearby areas, you can get matched with a tutor who fits your schedule and learning style.

Practice tests are critical—they help you build endurance, identify timing issues, and get comfortable with the actual test format. Taking full-length practice tests under timed conditions reveals which sections slow you down and where your knowledge gaps are. Most students benefit from taking 3-5 full practice tests throughout their preparation, with detailed review of every missed question to understand why you got it wrong.
