Frequently Asked Questions
Your first session is all about understanding where you stand. A tutor will review your current grade, discuss which concepts feel shaky (supply and demand, elasticity, market structures), and learn about your AP exam goals. This helps create a personalized study plan that targets your specific weak areas rather than reviewing material you've already mastered.
Score improvement depends on your starting point and how consistently you study, but most students see meaningful gains—often 1-2 points on the AP scale (1-5)—when they work with a tutor on weak concepts and practice exam timing. The biggest improvements come from targeted practice on the free-response section and learning to manage the 70-minute exam pacing, which many students struggle with initially.
Students often find elasticity calculations, consumer and producer surplus, and the various market structures (perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly) conceptually tricky. The free-response section is another challenge—it requires you to not just know concepts but explain them clearly and support your reasoning with graphs and calculations, which is different from multiple-choice questions.
The exam has 60 multiple-choice questions (70 minutes) and 3 free-response questions (60 minutes). Most students benefit from spending about 1 minute per multiple-choice question to leave time for review, then allocating roughly 20 minutes per free-response question. A tutor can help you practice this pacing under timed conditions and teach you how to quickly identify what each question is really asking—a skill that takes practice.
Aim for at least 3-4 full practice tests under timed conditions in the weeks leading up to the exam. After each test, review every question you missed to understand why—this is where real learning happens. Many students make the mistake of taking practice tests but not analyzing them thoroughly; a tutor can help you identify patterns in your mistakes and address root causes rather than just memorizing answers.
Look for someone with strong economics knowledge who has specifically helped students prepare for the AP exam—they should understand the exam format, common student mistakes, and effective strategies for both the multiple-choice and free-response sections. It's also valuable if they can explain concepts clearly using real-world examples, since AP Micro tests your ability to apply economic principles to actual situations.
Ideally, start tutoring in the second half of the school year—around January or February—so you have time to learn the full curriculum, identify weak areas, and do substantial practice test work before May. If you're starting later, even 4-6 weeks of focused tutoring can help you solidify concepts and improve your exam strategy, though earlier is always better for building a strong foundation.
Test anxiety often comes from feeling unprepared or unsure about pacing. Working through multiple practice tests under timed conditions builds confidence and helps you develop a rhythm for the exam. A tutor can also teach you calming strategies like reading questions carefully before panicking, skipping difficult questions and returning to them later, and using your scratch paper to organize your thoughts on free-response questions.
