Srini
Current Undergrad Student, Molecular Biophysics Brown University
10+ Years Tutoring

Molecular biophysics at Brown means Srini spends his coursework translating physical systems into mathematical models — the same skill the SAT Math section tests when it buries quadratic relationships or exponential growth inside wordy, real-world scenarios. His 1600 SAT speaks for itself, and he uses that familiarity with the test to teach students how to strip geometry and advanced algebra questions down to their core operations before time pressure kicks in.

Abby
BA Brown University
1+ Years Tutoring

Eleven years of studying French grammar might seem unrelated to SAT Math, but Abby's real skill is teaching students to decode structure — and the SAT's word-heavy algebra problems are essentially translation exercises, converting messy English into clean equations. Her 1590 SAT means she's already dismantled this test at the highest level, and her Education Studies training at Brown gives her a framework for pinpointing exactly where a student's setup process goes wrong before the math even starts.

June
BA Brown University
1+ Years Tutoring

I'm an electrical engineering major at Brown University with interests in neuroscience, linguistics, and robotics, among other things. I've always loved learning, and my curiosity has led me through numerous subject areas. I constantly seek to apply my classroom learning in practical situations. For example, I have conducted research on dementia using electrophysiology in a mollusk model. I participate in hackathons and robotics challenges that test not only my programming ability but also my hardware skills as a tinkerer. My engineering pursuits require a strong foundation in mathematics, my interest in the life sciences calls for a myriad of memorization techniques, and my participation in the academic world at large reminds me daily of the importance of sharp writing skills. I hope to share some of these things, both content and technique, with my students. Though I will make sure that they can come away from each session armed with the skills needed to take on the modern education system, I also hope that they will take with them some appreciation for learning itself.

Anna
Current Undergrad, Education and American Studies Brown University
10+ Years Tutoring

Scoring a 1550 on the SAT gave Anna a clear map of what the Math section actually tests — not advanced math, but the ability to read tricky word problems and choose the right approach under time pressure. She breaks down each question type, from passport-to-advanced-math polynomials to heart-of-algebra linear systems, so students recognize patterns before they even pick up a pencil. Rated 5.0 by students.

I am a professional writer, editor, and teacher with a range of experience leading classes on writing and working with high-school and college-level students to improve their essay-writing and test-taking skills. I am eager to work with students in middle school, high school, or college to improve their reading comprehension and critical writing skills, assist with standardized test prep (ACT, SAT, GRE), provide guidance on college application essays, and teach a wide range of subjects in the humanities and social sciences. I am a diligent, patient, and personable teacher who is skilled at addressing students' challenges with writing at every level of the process, from effectively organizing thoughts and structuring an essay to developing a persuasive argument and ensuring correct grammar and spelling. I am also deeply familiar with the genre of the college application essay, and can advise students from my experience as a tutor who has worked with students on their college application essays as well as an administrator who has reviewed hundreds of grant applications for cultural non-profits. Finally, I am well-versed with a range of standardized tests, having earned an International Baccalaureate diploma and scored in the very top percentiles for the SAT and GRE.

Math is Ariel's favorite subject to tutor because she loves replacing rote memorization with genuine understanding of why a technique works. On SAT Math specifically, she zeroes in on the algebra and data-analysis concepts that appear most frequently and teaches strategic shortcuts — like back-solving and plugging in — that her own 1590 score was built on.

Joshua
BA Brown University
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a recent graduate of Brown University with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Classics and Slavic Studies but an emphasis on theater. A lot of my time at Brown was spent serving on the board of Shakespeare on the Green, Brown's only site-specific student theater group; I even assistant directed a production of Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" in the Fall of my senior year. I tutor a very broad range of subjects, but my preferences lie with the liberal arts (English, writing, reading, history, etc.). That said, I also enjoy the sensation of testing myself that I experience when doing math problems: I find satisfaction in solving a problem. That applies to standardized tests, as well, which have the added bonus of being a race against time. In short: I enjoy a good challenge, and the biggest challenge out there (in my opinion) is education. Education is the pathway to intellectual curiosity which hopefully can continue to define more and more people. Seeking to understand is what makes us human after all. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy curling up by the fire with a good book and a cat, watching and talking about TV or movies, Boston sports, science-fiction, anime, running, cooking and eating food, and, of course, long walks on the beach. I am training to be a professional actor, and my goal is to one day be conversational in French, Russian, and Japanese which will either be very useful or no help at all when I set off to help colonize Mars. All jokes aside, I am very excited to begin tutoring.

Emergency medicine demands fast, accurate decision-making under pressure — and Victoria brings that same mindset to SAT Math, where students often know the content but lose points to pacing and second-guessing on algebra and geometry questions. Her 1530 SAT means she's personally navigated the test at an elite level, and her med school background in quantitative reasoning keeps those skills sharp. She teaches students to commit to a solution strategy quickly and move on, mimicking the triage thinking that drives her clinical training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Score improvement depends on your starting point and commitment level, but students typically see gains of 50-100+ points with focused preparation. Many students improve their pacing and accuracy significantly after identifying their specific weak areas—whether that's algebra, geometry, or test-taking strategy. Working with a tutor helps you target your study time on the concepts holding you back rather than reviewing material you already know.

Your first session focuses on understanding your current strengths and challenges. A tutor will likely review your recent practice test results, discuss which math topics feel most difficult, and assess your pacing and test-taking approach. This diagnostic helps create a personalized study plan tailored to your goals and timeline before test day.

Pacing challenges often come from spending too long on difficult problems or second-guessing correct answers. A tutor can teach you strategic approaches like tackling easier problems first to build confidence and secure points, then returning to harder problems with remaining time. Practice tests with timed conditions are essential—they help you develop a realistic sense of how to allocate your 80 minutes across 58 questions.

Students often struggle with algebra and linear equations, word problems that require translating English into math, and geometry/trigonometry concepts. Many also find the calculator section deceptively tricky—they assume a calculator will help but actually need strong conceptual understanding. Understanding the specific question formats and what each problem is really asking (not just the math) makes a huge difference in accuracy.

Practice tests are crucial—they're the best way to identify your weak areas, build test stamina, and get comfortable with timing and question formats. Taking full, timed practice tests regularly (ideally every 1-2 weeks) shows you exactly where to focus your study efforts. A tutor can review your practice test results with you to spot patterns in your mistakes and adjust your study plan accordingly.

Confidence comes from preparation and familiarity. When you've practiced problems repeatedly, understood the concepts, and timed yourself many times, test day feels less intimidating. Tutors also teach stress-management strategies like taking deep breaths between problems, skipping and returning to difficult questions, and maintaining perspective—one tough problem doesn't derail your entire test.

Look for tutors with strong math backgrounds, proven success helping students improve SAT scores, and familiarity with the current SAT format and question types. Experience teaching test-taking strategy—not just math—is equally important. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who understand both the content and the test itself, so you're learning math in the context of how it's actually tested.

Most students benefit from 2-4 months of consistent preparation, though this varies based on your starting score and target goal. If you're aiming for significant improvement (100+ points), starting earlier gives you time to master concepts and take multiple practice tests. Working with a tutor helps you make efficient use of your study time so you're not cramming—consistent, focused practice over weeks beats last-minute intensive study.
