I love to help students to do well on the SAT and ACT Verbal, Reading, and English sections. I have tutored these areas of standardized tests for more than 3 years. My approach is not "standardized" because I enjoy working one-on-one with clients to tailor learning experiences that address each person's unique needs. As a former professor of communication, I also have the skills to help professionals and graduate students with their research and writing. I am currently helping a doctoral student with her dissertation.

I like helping students. I am very patient. I have experience teaching Calculus classes at the University of Miami. I have done private tutoring for all levels of math up to Calculus, as well as Statistics, Business Math, and Math Finance. I have worked in the actuarial field. I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Michigan State University and a Master's degree in mathematics from the University of Miami. I worked for The Princeton Review as a tutor for the SAT. I did very well on both the SAT and ACT, and like teaching students how to do better on those. I like history, too, and always find it fun to tutor history.

Tutoring is about a lot more than studying, tests, and knowledge. I believe the interpersonal relationship involved with teaching greatly benefits both parties. Learning is fundamental to life- and turning otherwise cumbersome and difficult tasks like passing a hard class into a lightbulb moment is where I find my satisfaction. Turning such a familiar struggle into newfound realization and understanding is what I aim for.

I am fortunate; I get to do the best job in the world. While teaching is my second career, it was always what I wanted to do. When I graduated from college, I was offered a position with my college's admissions and marketing office, where I had been working to put myself through school. It was a tremendous opportunity, and launched an eighteen-year career helping high school students make important decisions about their futures, and navigate an often complex admissions and financial aid system. I loved working with students, being around bright, engaging people, and doing work that made a difference. But each time I walked through a high school to present a workshop on writing college essays or preparing for college interviews, I was reminded of how deeply I still wanted to be in a classroom. So I took the plunge, and now spend my days teaching social studies to great students at a great school. I have taught world history, American history, sociology, psychology, economics, and even developed a high school course in teaching for students seeking a career in education. I am passionate about understanding how the past has shaped the present, and helping students recognize their critical role in protecting and preserving democracy. In addition to teaching course curricula, I work with students on writing skills, standardized test preparation, and college essays, because all of these skills will help them reach their academic goals. As a teacher, I believe that it is critical to help students develop the ability to regulate their own learning, and implement meta-cognitive strategies that will serve them in college and beyond. When I'm not teaching, I am a mom to a high school sophomore, a long-distance mom to two college students, a gardener who grows lots of organic vegetables, and an avid reader of anything historical. If I can help you in a specific subject area, or with essays, test preparation, or homework support, either face-to-face or on-line, let me know!

I have had the opportunity to teach and to tutor thousands of students over my 33 year teaching career. I believe that each student is unique, and that academic skills and weaknesses should be assessed and targeted for the best results. I also hope that it can be a FUN learning experience! I love it when students develop a passion for a subject like Biology, or develop an understanding and/or respect for Algebra, Geometry, etc. Most important to me is that the student ultimately feels successful, and sees improvement. Learning is a lifelong skill, and the desire to become better academically or to pass a class with a particular grade provides the motivation and opportunity to grow! I feel fortunate to be able to assist in those endeavors!

MS University of Edinburgh • BA Mcgill University
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a graduate of McGill University (BA First Class Honors) and the University of Edinburgh (MSc First Class Honors with Distinction) with over eight years of tutoring experience. I am currently a curriculum developer for a company which creates relatable and culturally-literate courses for middle and high-schools, and am particularly adept at communicating and explaining concepts in a quirky, engaging, and intelligent manner. I was named Scotland International Young Thinker of the Year 2014 for exactly that sort of work. Much of my tutoring background is in test-prep and essay coaching, which I enjoy because it allows the tutor and student to think strategically together, and work as a team to achieve concrete results. I have worked with students ranging in age from 6-32, and believe that, in an educational context, a few jokes never hurt anybody. I love reading and learning, and my educational approach is centered around making the material just as engaging to students as it is to me. I think J.K. Rowlings, the writer of Harry Potter, is just as brilliant as Stephen Hawking, and in my free time, I manage my (terrible) fantasy baseball team, write songs for my comedy band, and crack jokes about terrible science-fiction movies with my friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a standardized exam used by many private and Catholic schools to assess student readiness for high school coursework. Students in Reno typically take the HSPT in 8th grade if they're applying to private secondary schools in the area. The test evaluates verbal skills, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, math, and language arts to help schools place students in appropriate academic levels.

The HSPT has five sections: Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading, Mathematics, and Language Arts, plus an optional essay. The entire test takes about 2.5 hours to complete. Each section tests different skills—for example, Verbal Skills focuses on analogies and logic, while Quantitative Skills covers number relationships and problem-solving without requiring advanced algebra.

Many students struggle with the test's fast pace and the variety of question types, especially in Verbal Skills where analogies require both vocabulary knowledge and logical reasoning. Time management is another common challenge—students need to work quickly without sacrificing accuracy across all five sections. Additionally, the HSPT's emphasis on reasoning and pattern recognition (rather than just computation) can surprise students accustomed to traditional classroom math and language arts instruction.

Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to identify your specific weak areas—whether that's vocabulary, math concepts, or test-taking strategy—and focus on those areas rather than reviewing material you've already mastered. A tutor can also teach you pacing techniques, help you recognize question patterns, and build confidence through targeted practice. This focused approach is far more efficient than classroom review, especially when you're preparing for a standardized test with a specific format.

Most students benefit from starting HSPT prep 2-3 months before their test date, though the ideal timeline depends on your current skills and target schools. If you're strong in most areas, 6-8 weeks of focused tutoring may be sufficient; if you need more foundational work in math or reading, starting earlier gives you time to build skills systematically. Varsity Tutors can help you assess your readiness and create a prep timeline that works for your schedule.

Score improvement varies based on your starting point and how consistently you practice, but students typically see meaningful gains (50-100+ points) when working with a tutor for 2-3 months with regular practice between sessions. The key is identifying which sections need the most work and building both foundational skills and test-specific strategies. Your tutor will track your progress on practice tests to measure improvement and adjust the approach as needed.

An effective HSPT tutor should have strong expertise in standardized test preparation, deep knowledge of the test format and question types, and experience helping middle school students improve their scores. They should also understand how to teach test-taking strategy alongside content review—knowing how to approach an analogy question or manage time across sections is just as important as knowing the math. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who have proven experience preparing students for the HSPT.

Your first session typically includes a diagnostic assessment to identify your strengths and areas for improvement across all five HSPT sections. Your tutor will discuss your target schools, test date, and goals, then create a personalized prep plan focused on the sections where you need the most help. This foundation ensures that all future sessions are strategically designed to maximize your score improvement.
