During my 3.5 years at Arizona State University I could never pick a focused area of study because I was, and still am, interested in everything. I started off as a math major because I was already very accomplished in the subject, having taken Calc 3 and Differential Equations in high school. However, I found myself wanting to explore other subjects as soon as I started college, taking courses in art and music history, dance, anthropology, and biology. I excelled in all of them, making it even harder for me to choose just one thing. I then became a biological sciences major, with an emphasis on genomics, but I couldnt let go of my other interests, wanting to continue my studies in anthropology, math, and dance. A year into that major and I wanted to change yet again, this time to physical anthropology. A year into physical anthropology, and I wanted to change my major even still. This time though I knew I had to slow down and really think about what it is I want to do.In my time away I have realized that what has remained constant for me is a love of learning. This is why I continue to go to my local library every month, consistently leaving with a stack of 10+ books. Furthermore, while taking classes in college I found that I really enjoyed helping other students succeed in their studies. I helped people in chemistry labs and biology labs, edited essays, and worked through math problem sets with other students. When I tutored students, regardless of subject, I would bring patience and understanding with me to the session. If they were not grasping a concept, then I knew it was something that I was doing wrong. Everyone learns differently and at different paces, and my goal was and is to be able to communicate the information you want to know in a style that is most suitable for you. Additionally, when it comes to math and science courses, I emphasize conceptual understanding. When tutoring and talking to other students in chemistry, physics, etc. , I found that often times they did not know why a formula worked or why a step was being taken, causing them to make mistakes when problems did not perfectly resemble examples done in class. When I tutor, I will make sure that students have a qualitative as well as a quantitative understanding of the material, making them more adaptable to different formats of test questions. And if youre wondering about French being listed in my tutoring subjects, I took four years of French in high school, placed top 10 in the National French test my junior and senior years, and I continue to work on my French by listening and talking to my boyfriend and his family, for whom French is one of their native languages.

I have been a classroom teacher at the community college level for over twenty years. The subject I tutor most is math. I especially like technical math because it relates to engineering (i.e. the real world). I can also tutor logic and physics. I am passionate about helping students because it is rewarding and it is what I do best.I believe that to learn something well enough to draw from this knowledge when it is needed, all relevant vocabulary and equations must be thoroughly understood. Formulas that are memorized without understanding where they come from are soon forgotten. I balance this tedium with jokes and funny faces to make my students laugh.I have found that each individual's impediments to learning can be very different. I use compassion and dialogue to uncover the causes of anxiety or helplessness technical subjects can engender. My bachelor's degree is from UCLA, where I studied math and physics. My Master's degree is from Arizona State University where I studied logic and philosophy. During the lockdown I became interested in machine learning and data sciences in general. I hope to earn a degree or certificate in a data related field.

I am a rising senior studying mathematics and secondary education. I have always dreamed of becoming an educator since I was little. As a child, I always picked the role of teacher when playing the ???pretend game.??? For this simple reason: I was allowed to perform whatever behaviors I considered a ???good teacher??? would have to my ???students.??? As a student, I was fortunate that I had many good teachers in my high school and college who inspired me, tried different strategies to help students conquer educational obstructions and became my role models in how to help others who needed. I love to teach, and I love to help others learn. Therefore, I tutored, taught, assisted, and observed students ranged from kindergarten to high school under situations such as English Language Learners, Students with disabilities, Gifted and Talented students. I tried to reach out to different possibilities and gained experiences in teaching effectively to different learners. My tutoring experience began during my senior year of high school. At the after school site that I volunteered to tutor, I was assigned to tutor 5-7 third grade elementary school students whom were considered as English Language Learners. My responsibility was to collaborate with the teacher to assist students with the reading, writing and math homework. Later, I worked at the same site but different location. I still served as teacher assistance, but my responsibility changed. I began to tutor students range from kindergarten to fifth grades with different types of supports. For example, explained and checked homework for each students in the class, translated articles to students who did not understand English so well, and collaborate with the teacher in classroom management.Since I enrolled into the education program in my college, I started to observe public middle schools and high schools in different math classes and gained experience in collaborating with professional teachers to set lesson plans that focus on the State Common Core Standards and meet the needs of all students. I also learned how to integrate technology and other strategies to effectively support students' academic needs. In the recent year, I became a teacher in the after school site that I used to volunteered. I taught students from different grade levels, and the majority of my students speak Chinese as their first language. My primary responsibility is to assist students with homework helps, make sure that all of them completed their homework accurately, and proper classroom managements to ensure that students learn under a supportive environment. All of my classes contained 20-25 students whom were from different elementary schools and different classes, which means that the majority of students had different homework and more likely to require one-to-one assistance. I collaborated with my teaching assistants in dividing students so each of us only responsible for a portion of students. Rather than taught students problem to problem, I focused in delivering the skills that they needed to acquire in order to solve problems. After I ensured that students adopted the skill, then they were able to complete the rest of the problems. This strategy allowed students to have independent practice, and provide all students with the opportunity to receive one-to-one assistance.I am a student studying mathematics in college, and through my previous background and experiences, I am confident in tutoring these subjects to my students. Through my experience in assisting elementary school students with homework, I received the opportunity to review the materials all over again and learned to apply different levels of explanations to different learners under the Common Core State Standards. In addition, when I observed public middle schools and high schools, I was able to observe how professional teachers teach the subjects, and combine with my own experience when I first learned the subjects to better provide effective support to students. Besides of being a math students, I am also a native Chinese speaker, and I lived in China until 12, which made me a great fit to tutor Chinese to students, as well as to tutor math to students whose home language is Chinese.I want to support students based on their needs. The one-to-one tutoring is a student-centered approach. Therefore, I want what is the most benefit to students. With my previous background and experiences, I believe I will be a great help to students academically. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

I have a Bachelors degree in Psychology and a Master's of Science degree in Occupational Therapy with a specialization in education. I also have taken extra college classes in Mathematics and Science to further my education. I worked for a few years on the clinical side of Occupational Therapy, and then my career path took a new direction. I got involved in a tutoring program for students at the K-12 level. I loved it immediately; I had found my true passion: working with and helping children. I started teaching students in various environments and to students of all levels.I have assisted teaching in a school, substitute taught for grades k-12 in all subject areas, tutored at a center for kids with special needs, tutored on-one-on in homes, taught lessons in an after-school program, and managed a team of tutors. I have tutored the subjects of Mathematics, Science, Reading, English, Writing, History, Spanish, and ACT/SAT Preparation. I have also been in a director role for an after-school program for three years. My true passion is working with children and helping them to feel confident, excited about learning, and positive about their futures. I believe allowing students to interact through auditory, visual, and tactile systems gives them a deeper understanding of their environments and the material presented to them.In the past, I have been able to learn from my students, laugh with them, teach them and advise them. I have always worked hard to overcome obstacles presented to me in my life, and I would love the opportunity to help other students to have this perspective as well. In my free time, I like to teach yoga, practice Pilates, and dance. I love to read, snowboard, and walk/bike along the beach.

I am a graduate of New York University???s undergraduate history program. My main focus was the cultural and intellectual history of WWII Japan. In my final summer at NYU I traveled to Japan where I studied Japanese, traditional music, and Wartime film.I offered my academic services both in high school and college, often to my peers, primarily in writing and mathematics. I work carefully with students to bring out clarity and richness of expression in their writing. Essays are essentially portraits of your character and logical flow, which is often where students are lost, is crucial towards creating a compelling voice. Mathematics is similar; it requires a practiced hand and a clear mental map. I am happy to guide students at any level and tailor lessons to their needs.Although I enjoy writing and mathematics the most, I have a passion for physics, earth sciences, reading comprehension French and Japanese. I encourage students to find freedom in these subjects rather than trauma. In each lies a means of expression and an opportunity for dialogue. Physics, for example, offers us a completely new vocabulary for describing our natural world. My goal is for you to develop a comfortable rhythm using unfamiliar vocabulary and the ideas behind them. Patience, young one, and you will feel empowered, not intimidated on test day!My method involves students in developing their own ways of learning and exploring what makes sense to them. We all come from different backgrounds and connect with material in different ways. Together we can develop this as a strength so that you have your own set of tools that you can apply to any problem. This, ultimately, is the test of any academic pursuit. I am comfortable reaching out and adapting the material whether it be SAT, SAT II, IB, AP, or classwork to where you are now.My hobbies include poetry, electronic music, ink drawings and youtube.

Elementary School Math Tutor • +2 Subjects

I graduated from Baylor University with a bachelor's degree in Economics and received my teaching certification from Texas A & M. I taught all subjects in an elementary setting for 12 years before transferring to teach in a middle school. I taught 6th grade Gifted and Talented and 7th grade on-level math. To put it simply I love teaching math. As a middle school teacher, I found myself in a difficult position when students would come to me to discuss their personal problems. I decided I was ill-equipped to handle some of their issues without the education and background experience. I decided to seek a master's degree in school counseling. I have been a counselor (specializing in adolescence) for the last six years. I miss teaching. I miss interacting with the students. I miss seeing the expressions change on their faces when they finally understand a difficult concept. I also miss the challenge of successfully teaching students that are not mathematically inclined. I believe every student can be successful in math with a teacher who understands their struggle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Henderson's 64 schools with personalized tutoring support. Whether your student attends a school in the Green Valley area, the newer developments, or anywhere else in Henderson, we match them with tutors who understand Nevada's curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.

With an average student-teacher ratio of 21.2:1 in Henderson schools, many students benefit from one-on-one attention that classroom settings can't always provide. Personalized tutoring fills that gap by giving your student dedicated time to work through challenging concepts, ask questions without hesitation, and build confidence in their learning—something that's difficult to achieve in larger classes.

Henderson students typically seek tutoring in math, science, and English—especially during transitions between grade levels and when preparing for state assessments. We also see strong demand for algebra support, chemistry, and reading comprehension, as well as test prep for the ACT and SAT. Tutors can help with any subject your student is studying, tailored to Nevada's academic standards.

The first session is designed to build rapport and assess your student's strengths and challenges. The tutor will ask about their learning style, current coursework, specific struggles, and goals—whether that's improving a grade, preparing for a test, or mastering a particular concept. This foundation helps create a personalized plan that addresses exactly what your student needs.

Tutors working with Henderson students are familiar with Nevada's academic standards and curriculum expectations across grade levels. They can help students master state-tested content, prepare for Nevada's assessments, and develop the skills needed to succeed in Nevada's schools. Whether your student needs to catch up or get ahead, tutoring is aligned with what's expected in Nevada classrooms.

Tutoring pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and your student's specific needs. We work with families to find options that fit their budget, and many families find that personalized tutoring is an investment that pays off quickly through improved grades and confidence. Contact us to discuss your situation and get pricing information tailored to what your student needs.

Absolutely. Tutoring sessions can be scheduled around your family's commitments—whether that's after school, evenings, weekends, or during school breaks. We work with you to find times that work, so tutoring enhances your student's learning without adding stress to your family's routine.

Personalized tutoring addresses the root of your student's struggles rather than just covering material. A tutor can identify whether the issue is a gap in foundational skills, a learning style mismatch with how the material is being taught, or simply needing more time to process concepts. With one-on-one support, your student can rebuild confidence, fill knowledge gaps, and develop strategies that help them succeed—often leading to noticeable grade improvements within weeks.
