I live by my lists by Taylor - February 2026 Scholarship Essay

I have always been a good student who never saw myself as a good student. I got good grades, but everything didn't feel like it came so easily for me. I got overwhelmed whenever I had to start an assignment or study for a test or even clean my room. I would get so overwhelmed that I would just shut down. I started to suspect that I had ADHD. I decided to start researching what might be going on with me. I checked out Instagram stories, TikTok videos, articles, and podcasts. I began to learn how ADHD can look very different in girls. I realized that looking “successful” on the outside didn’t erase the difficulties I was feeling on the inside. I shared what I had learned with my parents. I had to advocate for months before they were convinced, but I eventually got tested and diagnosed. It was one of the most important experiences of my life. The label helped me understand how my brain works and how I can support myself in school and life. Next, I began researching strategies that help people with ADHD cope. I tried a lot of strategies that just didn't work for me. Then one day, I found the ultimate strategy that turned my life around. I started making lists. It sounds so simple and silly, but it works for me so well. Every night before I go to bed, I write down a list of the things that I need to do the next day. I have to write the things-typing doesn't work for me. This helps my brain stop going crazy before sleep, it helps me wrap my head around what I need to accomplish, and it helps me prioritize what is most important. The next day, I start working on that list. I don't always finish the list, but I always get to the things that are at the top of it. I feel so much more in control of my life and my thoughts with these lists. Now I tell everyone in my life to try it. Making lists has been so important for me.
