MIddle School Struggles by Rayanne - February 2026 Scholarship Essay

I have faced many challenges that I have learned from. But my most recent was this year as an 8th grader. Most of the time in school, I felt rather confident in science. I was not perfect at it, nor was I struggling. But once I began doing Honors science in 7th grade, I began to face a task in that subject that I usually didn’t have to worry about, that task being memorization. I Managed to get myself through it and was able to move onto biology, a high school course in 8th grade. I entered this course thinking I wouldn’t struggle as much as I did in 7th grade, But I was wrong.

One of the first things my teacher said was “this class requires lots of studying and memorization” but again, I ignored this warning. As the year went on, I found myself struggling and often cramming multiple subjects the night before a test, instead of evening out my studying and reviewing properly.

As I am now in the process of overcoming this challenge, I have learned that my life will get more difficult the more that I excel, and I need to learn how to make changes in my habits to keep my schedule and grades how I like them. I know this will be quite a difficult challenge to overcome, but I also know that it will be worth it.
