Perseverance Leads to Growth by Hugh - February 2026 Scholarship Essay
"Ninety percent of growth comes in the last two reps," an expression thrown around in the gym, meaning that for true growth to occur, you have to give 100 percent. This lesson, reinforced by the gym, has been crucial in my entire life. After my dyslexia diagnosis, I required tutoring to catch up to my classmates in reading. I slowly learned the importance of perseverance and how to improve; truly, you must challenge yourself. While reflecting on my life in preparation for college and scholarship applications, I have observed a duality between my experiences in the gym and school. As I began my gym journey, I knew very little and had to learn the importance of hard work and sacrifice to achieve results. As I made my way through school, I learned how to read and began to flourish. Through the support of my parents, tutors, and teachers, I was able to overcome my dyslexia and other learning disabilities, allowing me to succeed in school and now help other kids like me. I began competing in Powerlifting last fall, and I have had to find new ways to challenge myself to reach my potential. The challenges I faced and the lessons I've learned have taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. Just as I have applied these lessons in school and the gym, I will continue to use them for the rest of my life.
