The 9-5 Rule by Hailey - February 2026 Scholarship Essay

The best habit that I implemented in my college daily life is what I call the 9-5 rule. The rule is that I will only focus on schoolwork from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Only working during these hours allows me to focus on the tasks at hand and efficiently accomplish assignments. Many of my classes are in the morning and finish around noon, which allows for productivity in the following hours. This habit works for me and helps separate academics from interfering with personal activities and hobbies. I do not have to worry about completing homework over the weekend, because with my rule, it will be done in advance. The mindset of blocking off time for certain areas in my life has lessened my stress levels, thus helping with optimal academic performance. I almost treat school like a job. I clock in at 9:00 am, and my shift does not end until 5:00 pm. Afterwards, I am free to do whatever I would like. The weekends are more rewarding because I do not have the stress of a big project or homework looming over my head. I can enjoy my personal life after completing my academic duties. I am not saying that it is a universal fix, but this small adjustment in my life has made a huge difference!
