The Reward of Helping a Friend by Eyosyas - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

Helping others was something I always valued, but not until this experience did I realize the weight it had on people. It was two months till the end of school; me and my friend were on a walk when he shared that he might repeat a grade if he didn’t pass certain classes. Nothing worked for him and tutors were expensive, so I offered help. We planned to meet in the library for one hour everyday until the exam day.

The first day was hectic. He skipped lots of classes throughout the school year due to his work schedule, so almost all of the curriculum was foreign to him. We first started with the basics then did some questions to consolidate them. He was surprisingly a fast learner but we still had a lot of things to go through. This routine kept up until the exam day arrived. That was the longest and most tiring thing I have done to help someone and I saw the fruit of it after one week or so when the exam results were revealed.

This was the most satisfying feeling I felt by just helping a friend. Not because he passed, but because of the effort we both put into achieving that goal. Even though things weren’t smooth at first , everything worked out fine at the end. This experience revealed something that I didn't recognize in myself; it showed me a more dedicated and patient version of myself ,and it reminded me that helping others can also help you discover yourself as a person.
