Consistency in Small Moments by Emet - March 2026 Scholarship Essay
At our end-of-the-year football banquet there was a video that included highlights from the season along with interviews of the senior players. Earlier in the season, each of us seniors had been pulled aside and asked a few questions, including who on the team had inspired us the most over the past four years. When the video played at the banquet, I learned that a majority of the seniors in my class had named me as the teammate who inspired them the most and had impacted their lives in a positive way.
This was a very humbling and heartwarming experience for me, one I will likely never forget. I never set out to be the most inspiring person on the team, but I always tried to work hard, stay positive, and encourage the people around me. Whether it was helping younger players learn plays, pushing teammates during workouts, staying after to clean the bus or locker room, or keeping people focused during difficult parts of the season, I tried to support the team however I could.
That moment taught me that leadership is not always about speeches or being the loudest person in the room. Sometimes leadership is simply showing up every day, putting in the work, having high expectations, treating people with respect, and never being too good to do the dirty, thankless jobs yourself. I learned that the way you carry yourself and support others can make a bigger impact than you realize.
