A challenging, yet beneficial academic assignment by Dillon - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

A particularly challenging yet highly rewarding academic assignment I completed was my final argumentative essay for English Composition. The assignment required me to develop and defend a position on a topic I was genuinely passionate about. Selecting a topic proved to be more difficult than I initially anticipated, as I was interested in several issues and wanted to choose one that would allow for meaningful analysis. After considering multiple possibilities, I ultimately focused on the negative impacts of technology use. My central argument examined how excessive social media usage can contribute to declining mental health, distort individuals' perceptions of reality, and influence the quality of interpersonal relationships and socialization. Given the extent to which technology has become integrated into everyday life, I argued that society has become increasingly dependent on it, often viewing it as a necessity rather than a convenience.

One of the most demanding components of the assignment was the requirement to incorporate and address a counterargument. Doing so required me to critically examine perspectives that challenged my own beliefs rather than simply defending my position. To support my claims, I relied on credible scholarly sources and spent a considerable amount of time reading and evaluating numerous academic articles. This experience fundamentally changed the way I approached research by emphasizing the importance of assessing the credibility, reliability, and relevance of evidence before incorporating it into an argument. Throughout my research, I found myself partially persuaded by the opposing perspective, as many sources presented compelling evidence that technology serves as a powerful tool for expanding access to education, healthcare, communication, and other essential resources for individuals and communities that may otherwise lack such opportunities due to financial or geographic barriers. While these findings did not alter my overall position, they encouraged me to develop a more balanced, nuanced, and evidence-based argument.

As someone who has always been confident in my reading and writing abilities, I initially assumed this assignment would primarily involve conducting research and composing an essay. However, I quickly realized that it demanded far more than effective writing. It required critical analysis, the ability to synthesize information from multiple sources, careful evaluation of conflicting viewpoints, and the construction of a well-supported argument grounded in credible evidence. Ultimately, this assignment strengthened not only my academic writing skills but also my research abilities and my appreciation for the importance of approaching complex issues with intellectual curiosity, objectivity, and a willingness to consider multiple perspectives.
