Building My Future through STEM by Chike - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
One academic subject that challenged me at first but ultimately strengthened my critical thinking skills was AP Physics at Jackson-Reed High School. My interest in engineering began when I was younger through hands-on STEM experiences that allowed me to explore how things work. At Mad Science Camp, I built my own flying airplane and learned how design choices affected how high and how fast it could fly. Later, through NSBE Jr. (National Society of Black Engineers), I was introduced to VEX IQ robotics, where I learned how to design, build, and program robots. I also attended iD Tech Camp, where I explored coding and learned how to create my own video games. These experiences showed me that STEM was not just something I studied, but something I enjoyed creating with my own hands.
When I reached high school, AP Physics challenged me to understand the science behind the ideas I had explored for years. Concepts like motion, forces, energy, and problem-solving required me to think beyond memorizing formulas. I had to analyze situations, identify patterns, and understand why certain solutions worked.
At first, physics was difficult because each problem required a different approach. I learned that being successful meant slowing down, asking questions, and working through challenges instead of giving up when I did not immediately know the answer. As I practiced and connected concepts to real-world examples, I became more confident in my ability to solve complex problems.
AP Physics strengthened my critical thinking skills because it taught me how to approach challenges logically and creatively. It also helped me see the connection between science and engineering. The concepts I learned in class connected directly to my experiences in the Academy of Engineering, including designing projects and thinking about how systems function.
As I prepare to study Mechanical Engineering at Howard University, I know the skills I developed through AP Physics and my earlier STEM experiences will continue to guide me. From building airplanes and robots to studying physics, each experience has helped shape my passion for engineering and my desire to create solutions that improve people's lives.
