The Road to Support by Alexis - March 2026 Scholarship Essay
Everyone goes through moments in life when they need someone to stand beside them. One experience that showed me the importance of being there for others happened when one of my closest friends went through a very difficult time in her life. Her mom had just gone to jail, and suddenly her entire world felt like it was falling apart.
I remember how overwhelmed and scared she looked when everything first happened. She didn’t know where she would stay or what the next steps would be. Watching my friend struggle with so many emotions at once was heartbreaking. In that moment, I realized that what she needed most was someone she could trust to help her through the situation.
Her dad lived about ten hours away, and getting there felt like the safest and most stable option for her. I made the decision to help take her there so she could be with him. The drive was long, but more than anything it gave us time to talk. During those hours, she shared her fears, frustrations, and sadness. I listened, reassured her, and reminded her that she wasn’t alone. Sometimes helping someone doesn’t mean fixing their problems, it simply means being present and giving them someone to lean on.
The trip wasn’t easy emotionally. Leaving behind everything she knew and facing an uncertain future was scary for her. But when we finally arrived and she was able to reunite with her dad, I could see the relief on her face. Knowing that she was somewhere safe and supported made the long journey worth it.
That experience taught me a lot about empathy, responsibility, and friendship. It showed me that real friendship means showing up when someone needs you the most, even when the situation is complicated or difficult. Helping my friend reminded me that small acts of support can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
Looking back, I’m grateful I was able to be there for her. The experience strengthened our friendship and helped me grow as a person. It also reminded me that sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do for someone is simply to stand beside them during their hardest moments.
