Tutoring Has A Purpose by Abagail - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my senior year, I have been tutoring an adorable, energetic, and hyper-focused seventh grader in math. He started the year off barely even passing, and my counselor asked if a few upperclassmen would be willing to help. I told her I would love to, and started tutoring early in the school year. We would meet every Monday during our sixth hour. He would bring a math problem or problems, and we would work through each one together, step by step, until he did not know where to go. Then I would step in and guide him to the answer. Throughout the first semester, his grades in math got better, but so did all his other classes. He started having more time to put effort into his other classes, and excelled! Starting off this semester, three months in, he is doing absolutely amazing, and we have been able to drop tutoring to now once or twice a month. What I learned from tutoring is that I love to help teach people in subjects that I know, but especially one-on-one. During tutoring, we would sometimes get off track, and I would learn so much about this child. I learned about his favorite games, his siblings, interests, new hobbies, and so much more. I learned that I loved to learn about others and to help them succeed to their fullest potential.
