I have been tutoring for the last five years, and I am grateful that so many students have trusted me to help them achieve their goals. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Oberlin College. I am currently studying at San Francisco State University, pursuing my Master's of Science in Physics. Between my undergraduate and graduate studies, I served in the United States Peace Corps to teach English in rural Panama. In San Francisco, I have been enjoying helping my students improve their test scores on the SAT. I have a strong connection to all the subjects I tutor. Because I am studying science, I am most passionate about physics and math, but I excel in every subject I teach. Throughout my life, I have had many wonderful opportunities that resulted from my excellent education. It is important to me that my students receive an excellent education to improve their quality of life. In my free time, I enjoy playing guitar and bass, writing fiction, and improving my chess game.

Hi, my name is Alyssa and I am a math/reading/writing and organizational skills tutor for students from kindergarten to college. A little bit about me:In May 2015, I graduated summa cum laude from the Dominican University of California, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies/Teacher Preparation, a minor in mathematics and Honors. While at Dominican, I had ample classroom and one-on-one experience with students. I worked as an assistant teacher in six different elementary school classrooms (ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade) throughout Marin County. In addition, I worked as one of the mathematics, statistics and liberal studies tutors at Dominican's Teaching Learning Center (TLC). In my one-on-one with undergraduates, I helped students who initially struggled with concepts to ultimately master the material. Further, I helped develop students' study, test-taking, organization, and problem-solving skills. My experience also includes tutoring high school students (algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry and functions) privately. In the fall of 2015 I lived in Portland where I was a tutor for elementary through college levels with Cornerstone Learning. From February 2016 to present, I have been a tutor with Tutor Corps in San Francisco. I have had experience tutoring fifteen students through Tutor Corps from kindergarten up to high school in multiple levels of mathematics as well as reading, writing and organizational skills.I also have a passion in working with students who struggle with learning differences. At the age of eight, I was diagnosed with ADD and throughout my years in education, I worked hard to gain the skills and strategies that would help me succeed and progress despite my learning differences. As a tutor and teacher, I have a strong understanding of the needs of students. I am passionate about helping every individual go above and beyond, no matter what his or her learning style is. One of my most gratifying teaching experiences was tutoring a first grader who struggled with ADHD. He had been held back for two years in a row, but after a semester of working one-on-one with him using visuals and skills/strategies that worked best for him, this student began acing all of his tests and moved onto second grade at the end of the semester. In addition to teaching math, I also enjoy teaching dance and choreographing. I am currently a company dancer with Peter & Co and perform/tour with the company. I am also a guest dancer for several other Bay Area dance companies and am a freelance choreographer. Furthermore, I am a faculty member of Marin Dance Theatre and Presidio Dance Theatre where I teach contemporary, ballet and private lessons (to students from elementary to high school) and choreograph contemporary works for the pre-professional division.

I have been living in the Bay Area for about 6 months after graduating from Tufts University in Boston last May. At Tufts I pursued a degree in Biochemistry and Art History, graduating Magna Cum Laude. I will be pursuing a medical degree in the near future. During my time at Tufts, I spent three years teaching science to students of many ages as part of multiple outreach programs. My teaching experience covered topics from elementary chemistry demonstration to genetic research with high schoolers. While I enjoy tutoring a number of subjects, I am especially fond of science and math. My goal as a tutor is often to not only teach a subject, but get a student involved with a subject - that is, excited about it. I find students can make the biggest improvements when they feel personally engaged in the subject. Outside of academics I like bikes, coffee, and Kurt Vonnegut.

A mantra for my own education is to retrieve knowledge through higher education that others can apply to change their lifestyle and improve their quality of life. This is one of the reasons I am a pre-health student with an aim for a career as a Physician's Assistant. Tutoring students is directly related to my mantra and passion to educate. I am very eager to apply the lessons learned through high school and two years at Cal to help a student excel in any material. Because both of my parents are teachers (one high school-level and one university-level), I have both observed their teaching methods in the classroom and have received their teaching. I have had the opportunity to communicate through difficult concepts with them, evaluate methods, and test approaches occasionally with my own tutees. I have taught the English language, a subject I am very familiar with, to primary school students in Japan as well as have explained how polarizability benefits SN2 nucleophiles to a university peer a few days after learning it. These varying degrees of familiarity in subject material have helped me to practice recalling material on the spot to then explain it to a student. These different experiences have trained me to meet each student where they are.My schedule of availability begins on July 18 and until mid-August I am free from Monday through Saturday beginning at 8 AM and Sunday after 1 PM. I can work up to 30 hours/week.I look forward to working with you as a tutor!Christie Matsumoto

I was born and raised in Iowa. Upon graduating from high school, I enrolled at The University of Iowa where I double majored in Fine Art and Japanese Language and Literature. During my freshman year I was awarded a summer scholarship to study aboard in Tokyo, Japan at ICU. This experience sparked my interest in studying and living abroad in Tokyo, so upon returning after summer abroad I enrolled in another year long study abroad program at Meiji University. After finishing my undergrad, I returned to Tokyo where eI went on to advance my studies by enrolling in a Master's program at Tama Art University. Here I studied Typography. Also while attending school in Japan, I worked part time and eventually full time at an English Language school. Upon finishing my Master's, I decided to stay in Japan and pursue my career there and found my first job at Japan's largest advertising agency Dentsu. About a year later, I was later recruited to join Dentsu's sister company The Goal which is a fashion advertising agency. I spent about 10 years living in Japan before returning back to the United States. I have an excellent understanding of the Japanese Language as well as the culture, traditions and history. I think that one of my strengths is that I am very patient and understanding when it comes to teaching someone something new. I am also very passionate about design, fashion and music.

AP U.S. Government & Politics Tutor • +5 Subjects
I received my bachelor's degree from Connecticut College in New London (1980) and law degree from Suffolk University Law School in Boston (1985). In March 2006, I received a Master of Arts in "Security Studies (Homeland Defense and Security)" from the Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Homeland Defense and Security. I am admitted to practice law in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, and the U.S. Virgin Islands and have worked in both the private and government sectors.Since 2006, I have been a writer, homeland security/emergency management consultant, and instructor. I teach homeland security, emergency management, and public health classes, and design homeland security classes. My favorite subjects to teach are government/political science and homeland security. The first helps me understand our amazing system of government, and the second is about protecting it.My teaching philosophy stems from theories about adult learning (andragogy). Rather than the teacher simply spewing facts (pedagogy), the teacher is a facilitator of learning to a motivated learner. Students need to know facts, but learning is more than that. It includes thinking about the material.

I am an undergraduate at Tulane University in New Orleans, but will be spending next year abroad at the London School of Economics. I was born here in San Francisco, and I have lived in this amazing city ever since. I???ve been tutoring for several years in a variety of subjects: from reading and writing for ESL (English as a second language) students, to Calculus and Economics, and for a variety of ages: from kindergarteners to my peers at college. Math has definitely been my favorite subject to tutor; I find joy in helping people who are struggling get to a point where concepts finally make sense. There is a sort of instant gratification when you are able to find a solution to a tricky math problem. Through my experience with standardized tests like the SAT, I have found many tricks to beating the ???game??? of standardized testing and would love to share them with you. Most importantly, I believe that everyone has a unique learning style and that I, as a tutor, need to adapt to be able to help the students I work with get the most out of tutoring.During my free time I enjoy baking, spending time with friends at a park, and going to music festivals. I also love exploring the city of New Orleans when I???m at school, and I even still enjoy wandering San Francisco despite having lived here my entire life.I think everyone has the potential to succeed in whatever subject they choose as long as they put their mind to it. I am looking forward to the chance to help you reach whatever goals you???ve set!
