Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Kia in Seattle, WA
The student wrote an essay in class and then needed to outline it as homework. This "reverse" essay writing was a great exercise for him because it really made him focus on what parts of his essay he needed to focus on. He plans on rewriting his essay after finishing his outline so that he can fill in all of the holes. He also has gotten great at handwriting everything before he types it up.

English Tutoring review by Gita in Seattle, WA
We began by discussing the timed writing assignment that she had had in English class the previous week. For most of the session, we worked on a timed writing assignment with an SAT-style historical quote prompt. She outlined the body paragraphs with her examples first and articulated her thesis. Since she has particular trouble writing introductory paragraphs, I had her draft it and we went over it together. In the past, she had been taught to include the quote and her examples in the thesis statement, and I helped her to relegate this background information to the beginning of her introduction and end it with a strong thesis statement that only stated her argument. She then wrote the rest of the essay, and we went over it together in the final part of the session. I brought up the issue of redundant sentences and had to edit to make the essay more concise. For homework, she will finish an essay about a theme in her summer reading book.

Today we continued breaking down the parts of speech. I gave him many sentences, and he broke them down by parts of speech. We did this focusing on adverbs and prepositions. We then began looking at different types of verbs, and how they function. We will continue this next week. His homework is to find five sentences in a book or newspaper, and break them down by parts of speech.
