Tutoring review by Anuradha in Hyattsville, MD
Today we discussed in detail about the formation of the Covalent bond. Covalent bond is formed by mutual sharing of electrons between 'non metals'. The compounds containing covalent bonds are called covalent compounds. We discussed a little bit about acids and bases. Acid is hydrogen ion donor and base is hydroxide ion donor. The reaction of an acid with a base gives salt and water. She worked on the School Assignments related to naming of various compounds, writing molecular formulas and categorized those compounds as acid, base, ionic and covalent compounds. She is in the process of learning the formulas of oxide, sulphide, phosphide, fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, etc.

The student was introduced to his topic on inequalities in his math class. We had previously discussed number lines and negative numbers so it was a great segue into reviewing those topics. He sent me his homework beforehand and together we worked through some of the inequality problems. Along the way, I created some practice problems for him to make sure he understands fully. We then moved on to word problems during which we practiced inequalities with a cost example.

Tutoring review by Alla in Hyattsville, MD
I worked with the student on an algebra review worksheet: solving quadratics by factoring. Her skills of factoring a quadratic with a leading coefficient of 1 are strong; she is also quite capable in basic equation manipulation (getting one side of the equation to =0, and quickly setting up and solving two-step equations). We worked on factoring quadratics with a leading coefficient other than 1, factoring a common term from a quadratic before attempting to factor into binomials, and factoring by different paths (that ultimately lead to the same answers). We went over last week's quiz (score: 41/50) and corrected each mistake. She had difficulty answering questions because of vocabulary and nomenclature: interior of an angle; linear pair; naming a line. Overall, her understanding of the material was strong; a few points were lost due to rushing when taking the quiz. She completed a geometry homework assignment based on surface area of a 3-dimensional figure. We discussed different ways to visualize the area of a trapezoid, and how each of those visualizations results in equivalent formulas. We also worked on being able to reconstruct any area formula if you just memorize the basics: rectangle, triangle, circle. Finally, I gave her a mental challenge to review and reinforce last week's topic of polygon angle sums. I pretended to be a student who misunderstood the method, and thus had an incorrect sum. At first, she could only tell me the correct sum; eventually, she could both use the formula, and explain to me--the student--where I had gone wrong in my thinking. She is very willing to persevere to make sense of math problems, and to explain her thinking aloud. These skills make her a joy to work with--in addition to being good for acquiring higher math knowledge.
