Recursion, sorting algorithms, and object-oriented design aren't just AP exam topics for Sebastian — they're concepts he uses daily in his computer science coursework at UCF. He teaches students to trace through code by hand before running it, building the kind of debugging intuition that turns a 3 into a 5. Free-response questions get special attention since that's where most points are left on the table.

Studying computer science at UCF while also tutoring Java and C++ means Hassan is actively writing the same kind of code AP Computer Science A tests — from designing classes to tracing through recursive methods — on a near-daily basis. He's especially strong at walking through the logic of free-response problems step by step, making sure students understand how each line executes before moving on. Rated 5.0 by students.
I am graduated from Penn State University in Industrial Engineering in 2017. I've tutored ever since I was in high school, and I love helping people! I like to help my students understand math (and other topics) instead of just doing it blindly. My goal is to help my students improve their math (and other topics) and build skills that will help them find learning easier in the future! Fun fact, I used to work for Disney and I like to salsa dance!
I am currently a senior in the Honors program, on track to graduate summa cum laude, and approaching completion of an undergraduate thesis on my work in the university's nanotechnology lab.
I'm a current student at the University of Central Florida and I love to tutor passionate students in a variety of subjects. I've taken and passed 15 AP exams in high school, and I've taken several courses at UCF that I could tutor as well.
I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.
I am an interdisciplinary educator with an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. My background is primarily in integrated arts learning and museum education and I specialize in visual arts, history and art history, and object-based learning. In all subjects, I take a creative, inquiry-based and learner-centered approach, designing opportunities for each unique individual to meet their learning goals.
I am a recent graduate from a masters program in biostatistics at Columbia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences, with a focus in neurobiology at Northwestern University. In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. I am very passionate about helping students feel more confident and excited about math. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.
I'm Solange - a recent graduate from Harvard where I studied Sociology & Women's Studies. I've been tutoring for eight years now, and have worked with a wide range of ages and in a wide range of subjects. Some of my specialties are college prep/test taking II worked in the admissions office on campus); social sciences; and literature/writing.
I am proud to be a part of Varsity Tutors! I am originally from San Antonio, TX; I completed my undergraduate education at Rice University in Houston where I received a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. Currently, I am in my second year of medical school at Baylor College of Medicine.
I am a graduate of Washington University in St Louis, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in History with minors in Humanities and Anthropology. Since graduation, I have worked as a tutor, teacher, and director of tutors at a charter public middle school in Boston. During this time I also received my Masters in Mild to Moderate Disabilities from Simmons College. I have worked extensively with students with a range of abilities, including students with specific learning disabilities, emotional impairments, dyslexia, and ADHD. My teaching experience has given me a deep understanding of the knowledge and habits essential to academic success and has given me the opportunity to hone a variety of strategies that ensure students at each level can achieve their academic goals. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, my favorite ones are Reading, Elementary/Middle School Math, History, and Test Prep. In my experience, tutoring is the most rewarding when a student has that "aha!" moment and achieves a new level of understanding and confidence in his/her abilities. I am a firm believer in the transformative power of education, and I see my role to be that of a facilitator and coach who is there to help the student reach his/her goals through individualized support and rigorous practice. In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, practicing my Spanish, and discovering new music. I am also an avid traveler and just got back from a 3 month trip to South America. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!

Frequently Asked Questions
AP Computer Science focuses on programming fundamentals and computer science principles using Java. The course covers topics like variables and data types, control structures, object-oriented programming, arrays, algorithms, and recursion. The AP exam tests both your understanding of these concepts and your ability to write, trace, and modify code—so tutoring focuses on building both conceptual knowledge and hands-on coding skills.
The AP Computer Science exam consists of two sections: a 90-minute multiple-choice section with 40 questions and a 90-minute free-response section with 4 coding problems. The multiple-choice section tests conceptual understanding and code reading, while the free-response section requires you to write and analyze Java code. Many students find the free-response section more challenging because it requires not just knowing concepts but applying them under time pressure.
Students often struggle with object-oriented programming concepts, particularly inheritance and polymorphism, as well as tracing through complex code logic and recursion. Time management is another major challenge—the free-response section requires writing and debugging code quickly, which many students find stressful. Personalized tutoring helps you identify which specific topics are holding you back and develop strategies to work through code problems efficiently.
Score improvement depends on where you're starting and how consistently you practice. Students who work with tutors typically see the biggest gains by focusing on their weakest areas—whether that's understanding algorithms, debugging code, or managing time during the exam. Most students benefit from starting tutoring 2-3 months before the exam, with regular practice on past AP problems and targeted review of challenging topics.
Practice tests are essential for AP Computer Science because they help you get comfortable with the exam format, develop pacing strategies, and identify weak areas before test day. Working through full-length practice exams under timed conditions also builds confidence and reduces test anxiety. Tutors can review your practice test performance with you, pinpoint mistakes, and help you understand not just what you got wrong but why—which is key to avoiding similar errors on the real exam.
Ideally, you should start tutoring in the fall or early winter if you're taking the exam in May. This gives you time to solidify foundational concepts, work through challenging topics like recursion and OOP, and complete multiple practice exams. If you're starting closer to the exam date, tutoring can still help you focus on high-impact topics and test-taking strategies, though starting earlier allows for more thorough preparation.
You don't need advanced coding experience, but familiarity with basic programming concepts is helpful. Many students come in with little to no coding background and succeed by starting with fundamentals and building progressively. Tutors work with you at your level, whether you're learning Java syntax for the first time or refining your ability to write efficient algorithms and debug complex code.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in AP Computer Science and understand the specific challenges of the exam. When you get matched with a tutor, you can discuss your current level, target score, and timeline so they can create a personalized study plan. Whether you need help with specific coding concepts, practice exam review, or overall test strategy, tutors can tailor their approach to help you succeed.
