I am an experienced teacher and tutor who has worked with students at all levels for ten years. My students have consistently shown increased test scores and understanding, in part because I make the learning fun. Plus, I am skilled at identifying and addressing other issues that interfere with understanding (such as fear or misunderstanding of basic skills). My credentials: I hold New York state certification in Chemistry and English. At present I teach test preparation and tutor while I work on a book. In the past, I have taught middle school science, high school English, and elementary math and test-based preparation for the SAT, SSAT, ISEE in English and math. My main background is in English, but I started college in engineering school. Also I'm a published writer and have been thanked for my contributions to three award-winning books. My results: Most recently, a student I worked with credited me with helping her get a 98 on the English Regents.Another student I tutored over the summer raised his English Regents score from a 59 (failing) to a 79, easily passing.Another student over the course of a year went from failing math to getting an A-.Two of my elementary students this year got 4s in math and 3.8 in ELA.

There are few things as rewarding as learning; helping students feel the same way is one of my main focuses. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to know who my learners are, what kinds of knowledge and experience they bring to the table, and what they want to achieve so that I can tailor a curriculum that fits their needs and yet leaves enough room to accommodate topics that emerge.I especially love teaching when the learning in my classroom/with a student is palpable. I believe that teachers who demonstrate curiosity and passion about a subject area motivate students. My philosophy of teaching is informed by the material I teach, relevant scholarship, and the lessons I have learned from personal teaching successes and failures.I have many years experience tutoring for SAT and ACT, as well as all high school level math and English.

I first discovered my passion for teaching while running statistical analysis and data science workshops for my undergraduate consulting group. When I realized that we could improve the quality of the work we did for our clients by including rigorous data analysis, I made it a priority to help my fellow consultants develop the skills they needed to use these tools. In this context, I developed workshop plans for individual project teams, teaching consultants both the conceptual foundations of the tools we'd be working with and how to apply them with statistical computing software to their data set. My work has helped students on a wide variety of project teams not only provide quality analysis to their clients, but also develop an interest in statistical techniques.I have a passion for mathematics and statistics, and I believe that anyone can learn to use these tools to answer interesting questions in a wide variety of subject areas. I care deeply about helping students understand how math and statistics can be interesting and useful, and how they can leverage their own ways of thinking to motivate intuition about these topics. I believe that no one is "bad at math", and anyone can succeed with the right study plan!Outside of tutoring, I will start a job in the trading division of a large investment bank later this summer. I am also an avid athlete: I love to run, and enjoy just about every fitness class you can imagine. The more intense the better! Additionally, I plan to pursue a PhD in economics, focusing on the economic impacts of gentrification and how we can address them through housing policy.

I graduated from Dartmouth College with a double major, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in both Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Music. I continued my education at Columbia University and received Master of Arts in Biology. Starting in middle school and continuing through my graduate career, I have tutored students in a wide variety of subjects, but I was most effective at tutoring math and science because of my lifelong love and aptitude for these subjects. Since I am also working towards a career in molecular biology, I use math and science every day, and I can explain real-world applications and uses for these subjects that may not seem obvious. By demonstrating the use of math and science in everyday life, I am able to help interact with the student and increase their interest in a subject in which they may experience difficulty. I also believe that as a tutor, it is my responsibility to engage with the student to help them achieve and even surpass their goals. In my spare time, I am heavily involved with music in New York City, being part of multiple choirs and continuing to play piano. I also enjoy exercising and exploring the city whenever I have the chance.
