Hello all! I am Tegan, an undergraduate at Rice University majoring in Biosciences on the pre-med track. Throughout high school and college, I have realized that the key to a successful academic career is having educators that are truly invested in a student's education. Enthusiastic instructors created exciting and engaging lessons which led to more motivated students. With my experience tutoring middle school students and adult ESL learners, I aimed to be patient with student concerns and hold a positive attitude while teaching, embodying the supportive culture I thrived in. During tutoring sessions, I hope to instill in students confidence in the material and to take ownership of their learning.I have experience tutoring junior high students Algebra 1 and 2 for 6 months. This was in a small group setting of 2-3 for an hour once a week.As a biosciences major, I have taken a multitude of biology courses and have a passion for understanding the "why" to life. Outside of school I have experience in full stack web development with React.js, Express.js, Python and Non-SQL databases. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education-emphasis in Piano and Voice (Texas Southern University-Houston, TX), a Master of Liberal Arts (University of St. Thomas-Houston, TX) and a Master of Divinity (Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University-Dallas, TX).In addition to teaching general music, I have been a middle and high school choir director, a private piano and voice instructor and a church choir director and musician. During my time in all positions, I have created effective age-appropriate teaching tools and lessons based on state guidelines and employer expectations.I am highly motivated by my strong desire to create an exceptional musical experience for children and adults. In my approach to private instruction, I am always intersted in learning as much as possible about the intellectual needs, the personal motivation and the musical potential of my students. I then went on to receive my Master's of Science in Counseling from the University of Houston Clear Lake in August 2010, and have served as a school counselor since August 2012 at the high school level. I have a love and passion for tutoring and instruction, and I have tutored since 2008 and continue to help struggling students. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Reading, Literature, and Math. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading that which enriches my life, watching sports, I've recently started CrossFit, and spending quality time with family and friends.

I am a senior undergraduate student at Texas A&M University. I will receive my Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering degree in December 2020 with a concentration in Analog Design and Power. I tutor because I love helping students achieve their goals: whether that be writing high-quality papers or succeeding on that next Physics exam. While tutoring Essay/Paper Writing, Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Physics at San Jacinto Community College from 2015-2019, I helped college students transition from struggling in their coursework to thriving. In this role, it was especially rewarding to tutor ESL students and witness their writing skills improve. Besides tutoring with San Jacinto, I worked with Club-Z to tutor elementary and high school-aged clients in various subjects, including SAT preparation. When I am not studying for my own classes or tutoring others, I enjoy learning new things, playing board games, and music--both listening and playing. I play piano, write music compositions, and use my music skills on my church's worship team! I have played piano since 1st grade and have 8+ years of experience performing with churches as well as teaching others how to play.

Within the last ten years, I have found myself exploring many different avenues during my career hunt. From volunteering at a pediatrics office to interning in research labs at LSU & UNC to teaching & tutoring high school/college students, I have come to one conclusion. I like teaching science to people--any age. I love finding new analogies and tricks to explain a difficult topic. I like to entertain--make science humorous and relevant.There was a period in college when I was considering a doctorate, although my interest did not lie in research. I purely wanted the degree so I could become an instructor for a university. Unfortunately, this is not the answer interviewers want to hear when applying to their lab. After being rejected by three colleges, I resolved that my passion for science and teaching would be better received by younger students. And I was right. I loved engaging my kids in the complexities of biology and chemistry every day. Letting them explore and investigate on their own was fun for both me and them.So why not teach anymore? If any young teacher is asked why they quit, I'm sure most will give the same answer: "huge workload." I commend any woman who finds a balance in this realm. But it was invading my home life, and since I have a one-year old son now, I want to be able to turn off and be a mother when the work day ends. This is why I prefer tutoring. I still get to help young adults find clarity in the most obscure content by employing means that they enjoy or relate to, and at the end of the day, I get to be a mom and wife.

I'm a proud Old Ag (class of 2011) and recent University of Texas Grad. I received my BA from Texas A&M in International Affairs and Spanish and my MA in Journalism. Most recently, I was a teaching assistant for undergraduate Journalism classes. I worked with students on their writing and multi-media skills. I have also taught adult ESL classes. However, my interest in education and teaching developed much earlier. My mom has been a teacher since I was a child, she and her co-worker friends taught me the importance constantly learning and growing. I am passionate about art, writing, foreign languages and history. My favorite subject area is Spanish. I am incredibly proud of my mastery of the language.
