A Time Where Feedback Shaped Me by Zariya - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my athletic career, I have learned that true success is never determined solely by raw talent or natural physical ability. While physical gifts may grant an athlete a strong starting line, long-term achievement is ultimately shaped by the people who choose to challenge, encourage, and believe in you enough to offer honest, unfiltered feedback. For me, that critical figure has always been my cousin, Amber. She has consistently served as one of my biggest supporters in every endeavor, and has never been afraid to tell me what I needed to hear. Her unwavering guidance has deeply influenced not only the athlete I have become today, but also the way I approach challenges, setbacks, and opportunities in every aspect of my life. Looking back over my journey, I realize that the foundational habits, mature attitudes, and core values I carry with me today were forged and continually strengthened because of the candid feedback she consistently provided throughout my track career.
When I first began running track, I operated under the naive belief that working hard simply meant showing up to practice every afternoon and putting forth effort. While raw effort is undoubtedly important, Amber quickly helped me understand the profound difference between merely working hard and working with deliberate purpose. She constantly reminded me that every tough workout, warm-up, fundamental drill, and designated recovery day served a distinct function in my overall development. Instead of simply going through the familiar motions to check a box, she persistently encouraged me to focus on executing each precise movement correctly and remaining fully intentional with every single element of my training. At first, I did not always appreciate hearing that I could be doing more, pushing harder, or paying closer attention to small details. However, over time, I gradually realized that true excellence is ultimately discovered within the smallest details. Her constructive feedback taught me that genuine improvement comes from consistently doing the small, tedious tasks correctly, especially when no one is watching. That vital lesson re-emerges in my mind every single time I step onto the track to compete or train.
In addition to refining my physical work ethic, one of the greatest lessons Amber taught me was the paramount importance of developing a resilient mindset. Early on, there were numerous occasions when races did not go according to plan, or when I felt overwhelmed with intense frustration regarding my performances. During those difficult moments, I would often dwell unhelpfully on my mistakes, compare my personal times to other athletes, or constantly question whether I was improving quickly enough to succeed. Amber would step in to remind me that a single bad race did not define my value as a competitor, and that meaningful growth required actively learning from failures instead of allowing them to become convenient excuses. Rather than allowing me to wallow in disappointment, she encouraged me to objectively analyze what happened, identify specific areas that needed improvement, and move forward with renewed confidence. Because of her insightful advice, I learned to treat painful setbacks as invaluable opportunities to grow instead of valid reasons to quit. This shift in mindset has made me vastly more resilient, not only on the athletic track, but also within the unpredictable rhythms of my everyday life.
Beyond developing mental toughness, Amber continually challenged me to cultivate personal discipline. She frequently emphasized that successful athletes cannot afford to rely on fleeting feelings of motivation, largely because motivation is inherently inconsistent. It comes and goes depending on mood, energy, and circumstance. Instead, true competitors develop structured routines and firm habits that keep them moving forward even on the cold days when they do not feel like training at all. Her direct feedback encouraged me to become far more consistent with every aspect of my preparation, including my daily workouts, post-training recovery, balanced nutrition, dedicated stretching, proper hydration, and sleep hygiene. Although these habits occasionally seemed minor or tedious when viewed individually, together they combined to make a massive, tangible difference in my performance when it mattered most. More importantly, maintaining these routines taught me that disciplined habits create sustainable results that mere motivation could never hold up over time. I now fully understand that lasting success is built quietly through steady consistency, especially on the quiet days when no one is in the stands cheering you on.
Furthermore, Amber’s influence extended well beyond my individual physical performance and directly into the realm of authentic leadership. As I gained experience and accumulated years on the track team, I naturally found myself stepping into roles where younger, less experienced athletes looked up to me for guidance. Amber was quick to remind me that genuine leadership is never about being the fastest runner on the track or receiving the most public recognition and applause. Instead, true leadership is demonstrated by setting a daily example through unwavering hard work, genuine humility, rock-solid consistency, and selfless encouragement of others. Watching the thoughtful way she interacted with those around her taught me the immense importance of actively supporting my teammates rather than viewing them purely as internal competition. I learned that celebrating someone else’s well-deserved victory does not diminish or subtract from my own personal accomplishments. This crucial lesson has enabled me to become a far more positive, unifying teammate, and someone who genuinely desires to see others succeed alongside me as we strive toward collective goals.
