Health is precious by Yesleen - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

In recent years my grandparents' health decline has proven to be too great, they no longer can sustain themselves physically, mentally, or financially forcing them to give up their independence and move into my parent’s house. My family and I have become full time care givers for my grandfather diagnosed with heart failure and high blood pressure as well as my grandmother experiencing dementia. Naturally, there has been a shift in our household responsibilities; it takes all of us working hand in hand to care for them and ensure they are living their best life. Even though we are all responsible for supporting their quality of life, I have taken the following responsibilities under my watch including deep cleaning of clothing and bedsheets after any incontinence, proper nutrition, administration of medication, as well as monitoring their safety. Since they have moved in, I have strengthened many qualities I previously did not exercise to this extent; the biggest one being my patience. Basic daily tasks that would take no time to complete have become challenging tasks and are big accomplishments. Emotional outbursts are unfortunately becoming more common as they voice their frustration. I have found managing the outbursts allows the release needed to help refocus them to the task at hand. Clear, concise, and calm communication is a must no matter how challenging it gets. Caring for my grandparents has made me realize the reality of life and identified my desire to pursue a career path in the medical field.
