Tutoring review by Zachary in Vacaville, CA
The student worked on his homework assignment for a chapter over work and energy. He worked through the problems and I showed him some shortcuts. He is very strong in physics, so I turned up the pace a little and tried to use different equations from previous chapters to get the same results. We also did a calculation of the energy burned cycling up an incline to see how many calories were burned. I am trying to show him how fun physics can be and how many interesting questions you can answer, and he seems to be interested in coming along for the ride!

Tutoring review by Jeffrey in Vacaville, CA
In this session, we covered a lot of review material for the student's upcoming test. This material included a lot of factoring of polynomials, finding roots of polynomials, and graphing these functions. We went over some use of complex numbers, as his problems now use those fluently. We also touched on a few of the harder problems in his review, which were quite inspired. His teacher is definitely giving some tough material for this subject. But we got through them well, and he seemed much more confident on this material than when we started. This session went very well, and I have no doubt that he'll do well on his next test.

We went over supplementary angles and how they add up to 180 degrees. There was a question on the angle of the hands of a clock at a particular time which the student was able to answer on her own. We went over the types of pairs of angles for parallel lines with a transversal and how to use algebra to solve for any variables or angle measures. It seems like she understands the material so far and can answer questions confidently!

During this session the student and I covered quadratic equations and identification of the type of graph given a set of points. The linear equation was easy for him to work with, and exponentials did not cause much of an issue as the formula is quite straightforward. The quadratic equation, however, was a little more complex, as we had to use points (given) and create a set of equations to eliminate variables. It's important to remember, when there is a (0,0) intersect, the formula is reduced to one variable; if there is not, then the formula includes all variables.

Tutoring review by Judy in Vacaville, CA
The student and I worked on the idea of comparing and contrasting two ideas. We read a nonfiction story that compared two ideas. She created a KWL chart prior to reading, and a Venn diagram after reading. She answered several comprehension questions. She returned to her KWL chart to see if any of her questions were answered from the reading. Finally she added more ideas to the Venn diagram to begin her comparison writing at our next session. I have seen progress in the tone and inflection in which she reads. I would like to see her build more confidence in her answers that she gives when reading and use the text to support her answers.

Tutoring review by Jessica in Vacaville, CA
The student had another productive and positive day today! He just had a chemistry and World Issues assignment due. He finished the chemistry assignment on ionic bonds quickly. Then, we worked on a bigger project for World Issues requiring that he analyze primary sources from four different countries in order to determine the prevailing perspective on the Treaty of Versailles. He did well with the analysis and questions response and was also very enthusiastic about writing a newspaper article from the perspective of the French. He had one section of the project left to complete (Great Britain) and the research table (comparisons of the four different responses).
