Sam Pickett the Hero by Wylee - October 2025 Scholarship Essay
“Blind Your Ponies” Is a book written by Stanley Gordon West, and has been a very influential book on my life. I have read this book at least seven times, and it is over 500 pages. Not only does this book provide a sense of comfort and nostalgia, but gives an excellent perspective and positive outlook on life.
This book talks about a small town named, Willow Creek Montana. There are 18 students in the whole highschool, and the boys basketball team has a 90 game losing streak. This all changes though, when history teacher Sam Pickett is voluntold to coach the boys basketball team. Sams leadership skills portrayed in this book have stuck with me since I first read this book. Sam had a bit of a tortured past, his girlfriend was murdered at a burger king, which prompted him to move to Willow Creek. While this had quite an effect on him, he does not let his past define him.
With Sams skills, a seven foot tall Norwegian exchange student, a talented player from Minneapolis, and his 4 prior players, Sam is able to lead the basketball team to their first victory in 5 years. Not only does Sam hone their basketball skills, he teaches them life lessons, and nurtures life long friendships within the boys.
The boys continue their winning streak, and against all odds, win the Montana state championship. Sam Pickett is the kind of leader I wish to emulate. Selfless, kind, hard working, and strong. Sam has taught me that your past does not define you, and that you can win against the odds. Sams character has stuck with me, and is one of the main reasons I love this book so much. All in all, Sam Picket is the perfect example of God using ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
