How my degree will make a difference by William - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
I am pursuing a degree in Computer Science because I want to build a career where I can solve problems, help people, and create opportunities through technology. Ever since I became interested in computers and information technology, I have enjoyed learning how systems work and finding solutions to technical challenges. Technology continues to shape nearly every part of modern life, and I want to be part of creating systems that improve efficiency, communication, and security for others. My long-term goal is to work in the IT and computer science field while also continuing to grow as a leader in my community.
I have already taken important steps to demonstrate my commitment to these goals. While balancing academics and athletics as a college baseball player, I earned my IT Help Desk Certification and developed practical technical skills in troubleshooting, networking, and customer support. Balancing sports and academics has taught me discipline, time management, and perseverance.
Being a student-athlete requires consistency and accountability every day, and those qualities have helped prepare me for the challenges of pursuing a career in STEM.
Outside of the classroom, I continue learning about technology independently by researching cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and emerging developments in computer systems. I enjoy solving technical problems and understanding how technology can be used to improve people’s daily lives. These experiences have strengthened my passion for computer science and confirmed that this is the career path I want to pursue.
My commitment to making a difference also comes from my experiences mentoring younger athletes in my community. I help coach my younger brothers and other youth players in baseball and basketball, teaching them discipline, teamwork, and confidence. Through mentoring, I have learned that leadership is not only about personal success but also about helping others grow. I want to bring that same mindset into my future career by using technology to create positive change for others.
With my degree, I hope to work in information technology or cybersecurity, helping organizations and individuals protect important systems and information. Cybersecurity is one of the most important challenges in today’s world because so many people rely on digital technology every day. Businesses, schools, hospitals, and families all depend on secure systems to communicate and store information safely. I want to contribute by helping develop stronger security solutions and educating others about safe technology practices.
My ideal journey includes continuing to gain experience in the IT field, earning additional certifications, and eventually taking on leadership roles where I can mentor others entering the technology industry. I also hope to use my skills to give back to my community by helping students learn more about technology and creating opportunities for younger generations who may not have access to STEM resources. Technology has the power to connect people and solve real-world problems, and I want to use my education to make that impact meaningful and lasting.
Earning a Computer Science degree is more than a personal achievement for me. It is an opportunity to build a future where I can combine leadership, problem-solving, and service to improve the lives of others. Through hard work, continued learning, and a commitment to helping people, I hope to make a positive difference both in the technology field and in my community.
