Speaking the Same Language: Respect by Valentina - December 2025 Scholarship Essay

If I were running for student body president, the number one way I'd want to positively impact my school is by improving how we communicate across different cultures. I took a multicultural communication class and it opened my eyes to how much schools are missing when it comes to helping students understand each other. We all come from different backgrounds, speak different languages, carry different experiences, and yet most of the time we don't really talk about it. I want to change that by creating more open-mindedness and awareness in our school. Not just through posters or assemblies but with real spaces where people can learn from each other. I'd love to help introduce something like a multicultural communication workshop or student sessions where people share their culture, languages, and most importantly their stories. Even a small class or group could make a big difference. This would help students who don't speak English well feel included instead of left out. They deserve a voice too and sometimes they stay quiet simply because the environment doesn't give them room to speak. I want to make that space. My main goal would be to make our school a place where everyone's voice counts and no matter their culture or language barrier. If I could help build a school where we actually understand each other and communicate better then I'd feel like I made a real impact as student body president.
