A Journey to a Plan by Trinity - August 2025 Scholarship Essay

Growing up in a predominantly White public school district, I stood out. At Mustang High School, Black students comprise just 4% of the population. I faced pointed stares during culturally sensitive lessons in class, yet I persevered—engaging and proving my capabilities. From a young age, I had to prove myself to my classmates by constantly raising my hand in class, being a leader during group projects, and advocating for myself when others doubted me. My personal experiences of feeling excluded have enlightened me to be cautious and aware of exclusionary behaviors; therefore, I will always include those who seem shy or confused. Through these efforts, I have inspired fellow Black students to participate in extracurricular activities, giving our community a greater voice and presence. I carry this responsibility with pride, knowing I am breaking stereotypes and opening doors for others.

Throughout my educational journey, I have always had a passion for science. Whether learning about ecosystems in biology, utilizing the periodic table to find chemical solutions in chemistry, or reviewing the complexities of the human body in anatomy and physiology, I always had a thrilling fascination for science. As I began exploring career fields, I realized that my passions for science and helping others could guide me toward a career in the medical field. This realization became personal as I
witnessed illnesses and a disparity in treatment protocol within my family.

My family's medical issues include diabetes, high blood pressure, blood disorders, heart conditions, liver failure, arthritis, and many more. Since I was extremely close to my family, I spent much of my time with Aunt Kim. Constantly being over her house as a child and teenager, I became aware of her health conditions. Unfortunately, she suffered from kidney failure, high blood pressure, and diabetes, which caused her body to deteriorate very quickly, ultimately forcing her to be put in a nursing home. Seeing my favorite aunt in these conditions made me wonder if earlier diagnosis and better treatment would have made a difference in her experience. I also became aware of the number of people in my community struggling with health issues and proper diagnosis. Having this realization and seeing my family's poor health has inspired me to go on to medical school and use my determination to help those burdened with destitute healthcare. I strive to help them receive proper diagnoses and change the scope of illnesses globally. I will be attending Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to major in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Medical Science to start my path to medical school.

Once I join the college community, I plan to join service organizations and inclusive groups to help me explore and build positive, diversified relationships within the SIUE community. With my strong leadership skills and ability to successfully communicate with people who look and think differently than me, I plan to contribute to organizations such as the African Student Association, the American Medical Student Association Pre-Medical Chapter of SIUE, the Association of Black Student Social Workers, the Black Girls Rock organization, and the Campus Outreach club. My commitment to helping those who believe they cannot fit in and joining the medical field will guide my pursuit of earning my STEM degree. Ultimately, I plan to use my passion for science and inclusivity to continue breaking barriers and inspiring others.
