Supporting the Steps by Torrie - March 2026 Scholarship Essay
The hallway was buzzing with dancers warming up and running their numbers, but I directed my attention to one of my teammates as she stood quietly, gripping her costume and trying to calm her nerves. Sofia was a few dances away from performing her solo, and the pressure was starting to overwhelm her. Her solo teacher wasn't there, and I could see how nervous she was, considering this was her first ever solo, so I offered to run her routine with her and reminded her that she was ready. I caught her attention when she glanced at me with a smile, and I knew I was doing her a big favor as she sighed in relief.
As we went through her routine with and without music, I made sure to give her corrections to enhance her performance on stage, build her confidence, and help her walk on stage looking her absolute best. I kept Sofia stretched and told her to do certain parts of her routine full out so those tricks were solid when showing the judges. Once we finished, I led her backstage and assured her she was going to do amazing and remember all the corrections we talked about. Watching her on that stage made me so proud, since she performed all her corrections with grace and ease. Awards approached, and I was extremely nervous for her as it could be my fault if she didn't do as well as she could have or even hoped to. My jaw dropped hearing the first-place winner, it was Sofia. In her first solo competition, she won first place, and I felt so much joy that I could guide her to that point.
She came running with her award, thanking me for my help and expressing how she couldn't have gotten through her performance without me. In that exact moment, I had a feeling I had never felt before, seeing firsthand how much one simple gesture can impact someone's mindset. I realized that being part of a dance team is not only about performing well yourself, but also about supporting others when they need it most. Helping Sofia reminded me that confidence can sometimes come from the people around you just as much as from within. By stepping in to help her practice and calm her nerves, I discovered that I naturally take on a supportive role within my team. I learned that leadership does not always mean standing in the spotlight or being the loudest voice in the room. Sometimes it simply means recognizing when someone needs encouragement and being willing to step forward to help them believe in themselves. That experience showed me that I value teamwork and empathy just as much as personal success, and it helped me understand the kind of teammate and person I want to be.
