Pocket Dream by Toni - August 2025 Scholarship Essay
Starting my freshman year of college, I’m stepping into a new chapter that I’ve worked hard to get to. I’m majoring in Business and Finance at Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA) because I’ve always wanted to build something of my own and learn how to make it last. My goals this year are clear: stay focused, grow personally and professionally, and make sure every opportunity I take brings me closer to the future I’m working toward.
Being one of six kids in a military family has shaped how I move. I’m used to figuring things out, staying disciplined, and pushing through even when things aren’t handed to me. Both of my parents served in the military, and while I’m grateful for the lessons that taught me, their benefits don’t cover the full cost of my college tuition. That’s a reality I’ve had to face early, but I’ve never let finances stop me from going after what I want.
This year, I’m focused on balancing my academics with my creative work as a music producer and entrepreneur. I’ve been producing for years and now I’m learning how to turn that passion into a business. I’m developing services that educate and develop artists on figuring out how to grow in an industry that’s not always easy to navigate when you have integrity and good morals. On top of that, I’m committed to my studies so I can apply real business knowledge to what I’m building outside the classroom.
What keeps me motivated is knowing this isn’t just about me. I’ve always wanted to break cycles and create something that lasts. In high school, I became the first African American President of my school’s music technology program. That leadership role showed me how powerful it is to be in rooms where decisions are made and how important it is to create space for others, too.
The truth is, I want to be successful so I can give back. I see myself one day funding scholarships, mentoring students, and supporting young creatives and leaders who just need someone to believe in them. That’s why I’m applying for this scholarship. It’s not just about covering tuition or easing the financial pressure. It’s about giving me the chance to keep showing up, stay locked in, and eventually pour back into the same kind of opportunity I’m asking for now.
