My character development by Terischai - May 2026 Scholarship Essay

One challenge I once found intimidating was the idea of becoming cheer captain. For a long time, I never saw myself in a leadership position. In my mind, captains were naturally fearless, outgoing, and confident all the time. I compared myself to that image so much that I convinced myself I was not the type of person who could lead a team.
As a flyer, I already dealt with pressure during practices, games, and performances, but the thought of leading others felt completely different. I was scared of letting people down, making mistakes, or not being “good enough” for the role. Instead of focusing on what I brought to the team, I focused on everything I thought I lacked.
What changed was my mindset. At some point, I had to stop looking at leadership as perfection and check in with reality. I realized that being a captain is not about always being the loudest person in the room or having everything figured out. Real leadership comes from being dependable, encouraging others, working hard, and setting a positive example even when things are stressful.
Cheer helped me build confidence over time. I learned that leadership is earned through actions, not personality alone. The more I supported my teammates and pushed myself outside my comfort zone, the more manageable the idea of leadership became. I stopped doubting whether I looked like a captain and started focusing on whether I acted like one.
Now, becoming captain no longer feels impossible or intimidating. Instead, it feels like a challenge I am prepared to take on. That change happened because I stopped letting insecurity decide what I was capable of and started believing growth was possible for me too
