Finding Strength in Stepping In by Teressa - January 2026 Scholarship Essay

The goldfish snacks ran out faster than expected that day. As I was passing them out of the big cardboard box, I watched a few kids just sitting there, Without a snack, I could see the disappointment take over their faces. I reached into my backpack and pulled out a few granola bars and fruit cups I had saved earlier during a school testing session, Snacks I didn’t eat but didn’t want to waste. It was a small moment, but it stuck with me. That instinct to step in when something isn’t fair is what sparked my passion for helping others.

I grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, in a low income, single parent household where resources were limited and support wasn’t always there. Places like the Boys & Girls Club became more than just an afterschool program, they were a safe space. When I later had the opportunity to volunteer there, I saw my younger self in the kids I worked with. Smart, bright, and full of potential, but mostly overlooked. Helping them with homework, listening to them speak about their day, and just showing up consistently taught me how powerful support can be.

That realization has influenced my growth in powerful ways. As a college student, I’m pursuing an education that prepares me to advocate for people and families who face struggles simply because of where they come from or how much they earn. I’ve learned that I don’t need authority or a title to make a difference. Just awareness and commitment. Discovering that strength in myself has motivated me and my path toward becoming a lawyer and continues to determine how I show up for others today.
