Prioritizing Myself by Taylor - July 2025 Scholarship Essay

As I reflect on the choices I've made throughout my life, one piece of advice stands out vividly, that is to prioritize how those choices make me feel rather than focusing solely on their impact on others. This advice represents a pivotal shift in my approach to decision-making, a shift towards authenticity and personal fulfillment.
From a young age, societal norms and expectations often shape our decisions. We are taught to consider how our actions affect those around us such as our family, friends, and community. While considering others is undoubtedly important, it's equally crucial to acknowledge our own desires, aspirations, and emotional well being.
One significant experience that underscored the importance of this advice occurred during my junior year of high school. I was torn between pursuing a gap year, getting and getting a full time job or following a more conventional path into getting my bachelor's degree, which my family strongly encouraged. The practicality of a college education seemed to align with everyone's expectations, yet my heart yearned for the life outside of school that a gap year offered. In grappling with this decision, I realized that while choosing to go to college might please my family and secure a stable future, it would ultimately leave me feeling unfulfilled and disconnected from what I wanted to experience.
Choosing a gap year over college was a decision rooted in honoring my inner voice, a decision to prioritize my own happiness and sense of purpose. This choice wasn't about disregarding others' perspectives but about finding the courage to pursue what truly resonated with me. It was about embracing authenticity and the unique path that aligns with my values and aspirations.
I am thankful I chose to take a gap year and work full time. I showed me that I did want to go to college and I felt like the choice of school was mine and not my family’s. By making choices based on how I will feel instead of to please others I feel much more fulfilled. It is not easy to break the norm and do something different, but I believe it was incredibly important for my personal development. I also believe that without taking gap year I would feel burnt out and less eager to obtain a higher education.
As I continue my academic journey, I am committed to pursuing opportunities that align with my passions and values whether in or out of the classroom. This advice will continue to guide me as I navigate future challenges and opportunities, empowering me to make choices that resonate with my authentic self.
